Best recipe delivery box?

I am a terrible cook, struggle for ideas and whenever I try following a recipe online it always goes wrong! As a family we really need to try some new ideas and eat a bit more healthily so I want to sign up for those meal kits for a few weeks to get some ideas.

I’ve seen Gousto advertised recently but does anyone have any experience of different ones and can recommend?

Thanks everyone. I’ve had a look through both and have started with a Hello Fresh box for next week, then will try a Gousto the week after. The Gousto seemed to be meals I can already make when I had a very quick look (spag Bol, lasagne, sausage and mash etc) so need to look properly to see if anything takes my fancy.

Has anyone tried Mindful Chef? It keeps popping up on my Facebook feed.

crustycrab · 31/12/2019 21:27

The meals are a bit more exciting with hello fresh. I agree that the Gousto meals are just bog standard sausage and mash etc. Still enjoyed them though

Another vote for gousto, i think there's been maybe two recipes I haven't been keen on. I was a bit snotty about shepherds pie 'i know how to make one of those!' But it was nicer than mine! There's often ingredients I wouldn't have thought to use. The timings are sometimes a bit odd though, so it's worth reading through the recipes first to decide whether each stage will actually take as long as it says!

ManiacalLapwing · 04/01/2020 20:45

Just coming back to say we've mads the gousto spicy chicken & greens grain bowl and it was amazing, so thanks for the code!

eatsleepmoverepeat · 04/01/2020 20:46

Morrison’s Eat Fresh is good

AnneShirleysNewDress · 04/01/2020 21:21

ManiacaLapwing Thanks for the Simply Cook code. I've just ordered a trial box.

Bumpinthenight · 04/01/2020 21:46

We have just had the chicken katsu curry from simply cook. Easy to cook and tastes great!

Just the herbs and spices from them so you still need to go shopping for ingredients. 280g of precooked rice is needed for one recipe, the packets of Uncle Ben's et al are sold in 250g packets so there will be some wastage (or mounds of rice!) or preparedness needed.

ballsdeep · 04/01/2020 21:50

How much is gutso or hellonfresh every month?

TreacherousPissFlap · 04/01/2020 22:09

We've used both and I would say that I prefer Gousto, particularly as I found the recipes easier to follow (I'm a reasonably good cook and sometimes find HelloFresh a bit tricky for some reason)
Having said that I have recently tried HelloFresh again and found their app extremely easy to use and great for changing delivery dates etc.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 04/01/2020 22:14

Gousto was very good

Trying Hello Fresh for the first time tomorrow!

I already think I’ll prefer Gousto...

Try both OP. Use the intro discounts and then decide!

bitheby · 04/01/2020 23:18

Gousto is my favourite. Hello Fresh is ok but I always seem to miss the order cut off and they send me random stuff.

Here are my referrals:

Enjoy this HelloFresh promo code! https://www.hellofresh.co.uk/?c=HS-XOQ2JUWV4&utmsource=raf-share&utmmcampaign=share-other&utmmedium=app&utmmversion=c1

Here’s my link to try Gousto! Use it to get 60% off your first box, PLUS 30% off all other boxes in your first month. https://cook.gousto.co.uk/raf?promocode=ANNE27097823&utmm_source=iosapp

Rosebud21 · 05/01/2020 01:26

@bitheby I had a look at Gousto, most meals are SOLD OUT, shame, some of their recipes look very tasty

ManiacalLapwing · 05/01/2020 09:06

AnneShirleysNewDress You're welcome.

Bumpinthenight I just cook my own rice, and make the amount we normally eat, so I'm sure a 250g bag would be fine. I don't think a bit of variation matters unless you are baking a cake or something. We substitute vegetables we don't like, or add extra vegetables too.

HeyCheif · 05/01/2020 09:51

ManiacalLapwing I tried a MindfulChef box just before Xmas. out of the 4 meals 2 were good and 2 were ok. We had a Thai meatball soup meal which was really lacking in flavour (I think it was just coconut milk, stock cube and a chilli. I ended up adding in my own flavours in a desperate attempt to improve it). It was quite disappointing for the price even with the discount. You do get recipes for the about 20 meals though which was good, not that Ive tried any yet!

BruceAndNosh · 05/01/2020 10:00

@Rosebud21 we've been using Gousto on and off for a couple of years now and this week is the first time so much has been sold out. I suspect they've got an offer on that has caused problems.
We are a bit last minute and tend to choose the day before cut off and there are normally 2 or 3 out of 40 sold out.

I've tried Hello Fresh and Gousto and prefer Gousto.
Cheaper, bigger choice, and you choose 3 days before delivery. I think hello fresh is 6 days before.

bitheby · 05/01/2020 13:44

@Rosebud21 Try changing your delivery day and more stuff will be in stock. Otherwise, once a new week’s worth of recipes gets released then you’ll be fine.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 05/01/2020 14:28

Well my first Hello Fresh box arrived today so exited about that!

ouch321 · 05/01/2020 14:38

Seems like none of these companies cater for people who live alone.

Both Gousto and Hello Fresh - just had a look on the basis of this thread - state 2 people as a minimum!!

BunnytheBlueWhale · 05/01/2020 14:40

state 2 people as a minimum!!

You could have two meals from one or a dinner then a lunch but you’re right that they could offer a 1 person option

babasaclover · 05/01/2020 15:21

ManiacalLapwing · 05/01/2020 18:58

Both Gousto and Hello Fresh - just had a look on the basis of this thread - state 2 people as a minimum!! I guess if a one person option isn't popular then it wouldn't be worth them dividing everything up into single servings. There's two of us but we usually cook for four and eat the same two nights running as I don't want to cook from scratch every night anyway.

thatguiltyfeeling · 05/01/2020 19:00

I loved hello fresh, and I have no idea why I stopped ordering from them but now we're weaning the baby I want to use them again as I'm rubbish at thinking up healthy meal ideas and using fresh food without a set meal plan

ManiacalLapwing · 06/01/2020 19:15

HeyCheif Sorry, I missed your post. That's disappointing that only two of the four meals were good. I was interested in trying them as they all look nice and the type of food we tend to like.

CaptainHammer · 07/01/2020 13:05

@MadameJosephine I used your code, thank you!
