Weighted blankets

I got a weighted blanket as a gift for Christmas - something I've wanted for a while as I suffer from fibromyalgia and anxiety and I'd read that they can be helpful for both.

Appreciate it's early days but I've slept using it twice and I'm not sure I like it - I'm in pain with my back and hips but this could be because I sleep on my side/front naturally so the weight could be causing my joints stress. Tried sleeping on my back but naturally I tend to roll over.

Does anyone else use one? I'm just interested as to whether it takes a while to adjust and whether it helps or if I'm using it wrong Grin

Have you got the correct weight blanket for your weight OP ?

PrincessBattercup · 28/12/2019 07:41

Speckledyhen Yes I just checked and it's correct. Perhaps I need a lighter one because of my joint and back pain. I just had such high hopes because of all the reviews.

Do you get joint pain with standard bedding ? I have one for insomnia and it has definitely helped the quality of my sleep . There are some brands that you can return after 30 days if they don’t suit, so I guess they aren’t for everyone. Can you return it op ?

I do get joint pain with normal bedding, mostly back and hips, and I get restless legs and insomnia. Might see if I can return it and consider a lower weight even though this is supposedly correct for me.

Thanks speckledyhen Smile

Good luck Princess .

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 28/12/2019 08:30

Oh thats disappointing. Ive wanted one for about a year but havent had the funds yet. I want to try one for mh autistic daughter too but I think they have to be the right weight. Not sure who comes up with the magic formula as I do love 2 duvets on top of each other for weight.

Im sorry it didnt work. Id hate to finally biy one andnit not work (might be putting me off spending the money!)

LateMumma · 28/12/2019 08:32

I've got a weighted lap blanket that I sleep with. It's smaller and lighter (and cheaper!) than the full blanket but still helps me with insomnia.

PrincessBattercup · 28/12/2019 08:59

Squashed - I know, and the only way to really test it is to sleep with it so it's a lot of money to spend if it's not for you.

Late - interesting that a smaller one might work. Do you link to yours or something similar? I will try anything that might help with my pain and sleep.

When you sleep on your side, have you tried a pillow between your knees to keep your hips more aligned? And if sleeping on your front, try a pillow under the hip and shoulder on the side your head is turned to so your body is a little more in line with your head. If lying on your back, try a pillow under your knees so they are slightly bent.

I've been trying variations of these things as I have chronic hip pain and hypermobility, and sleeping in positions where my body is supported in alignment rather than the strange twisted positions I would otherwise use has helped.

PrincessBattercup · 29/12/2019 23:21

Thanks tatyr - I have tried this to an extent but might have to experiment with pillows a bit more. I sleep with a pillow currently and a strange hybrid of side, recovery and front positions. If I sleep on my back I wake up so sore. My pain is generally lumbar due to suspected ankylosing spondylitis (rheumatologist is doing investigations), hips and pelvis. It truly is horrid isn't it?

You might have tried this already but I get terrible joint pain, especially af night and I have started taking magnesium and within 2 days the pain is totally gone

AmateurSwami · 29/12/2019 23:26

Weird you should say this as I’ve noticed my hip pain has been bad- hadn’t thought of the weighted blanket being the culprit!

EnidButton · 30/12/2019 01:35

How disappointing Princess. I hope a lighter or smaller one is better. If you try that and it's the better option, please will you do an update?

I have me and fibro and have looked at weighted blankets online because I'd heard great things. I do feel a bit better with weight over me (blankets/throws on top of the duvet) but sometimes it's too much for my hips and legs. I sympathise.

Fingers crossed you can find one that helps a bit. Flowers

I got one for Christmas and I've started dreaming again. When I fall asleep it's faster and I stay in that position at night now :) i love it and I'd never go back

Just saw the title and then this link flashed up for an amazon deal of the day if anyone is after a weighted blanket.

Regarding hip and joint pain, I got one of these knee wedge things and have found me knees and hips much less painful since I started using it

PrincessBattercup · 30/12/2019 21:49

Itsboiledeggsagain - I hadn't heard of that with magnesium but I do have some from when I had a brief flirtation with the keto diet and never got far enough to bother taking them. I'll go get them now before I forget and see if it helps! Thanks!

Thanks for everyone's replies - I will definitely update if/when I get a lighter one. I think perhaps mine might just be too heavy for me, particularly as I sleep like I've fallen from a great height in the splat position Grin

Just want something to work Sad

Torys- that's the exact blanket I have, oddly! It's the 20lb one.

Going to try it again tonight and try sleeping on my back. Wish me luck!!

let us know how you get on?

I'm interested for one of my children

mrsbyers · 30/12/2019 22:11

I got a koala blanket for Christmas , have slept brilliantly since I put it on the bed - for me I’m not waking to change position like I was previously

EnidButton · 31/12/2019 00:26

TorysSuck Just ordered one of the knee wedge things, thank you.Smile
