Is this a scam?

We rent out our drive as we don't have a car, we usually get long term rents and never had a problem. (We do it through a website)
Our usual Booker is away for Christmas and so the drive is empty.

We had a booking for 2 hours today and when we googled the name of the person and our city (we always do this because we're nosey) what comes up is a burglar who's been caught twice for Christmas break ins.

No car has actually shown up over the time which is weird.
But surely if you were going to burgle someone you wouldn't book into their drive with your real name?
We live in a not so posh part of town but it's next to a posher bit.

We're a bit spooked but can't tell if we're just being dramatic because we watched home alone recently.

Maybe he’s trying to “put” his vehicle and himself at your location as an alibi for something else.

furrytoebean · 26/12/2019 15:25

Ahhh good point.

Maybe he's going to burgle some houses in the posher part of town then come back and get his car and put the stuff in it. So his car is not seen the area where the burglaries have occurred x

furrytoebean · 26/12/2019 15:31

His car isn't actually on our drive Confused
He hasn't turned up.

I think the alibi thing is probably most likely: what do you think I should do? Alert 111?

No, they will laugh at you! Just ignore it, and the police will contact you if they need to.

QueenOfTheFae · 26/12/2019 15:33

What are you going to tell them?

furrytoebean · 26/12/2019 15:41

Ha! I have no idea Blush

I'm just a bit spooked

Is it such an unusual name that there could only be one person called that in the country?

furrytoebean · 26/12/2019 15:54

No I think there's probably lots of people called that in the country.

It's the fact that if you google that name with my city the first two articles are about burglaries at Christmas, with a person of this name being caught on two different years. That combined with the fact we hardly ever get short term bookings, and the places that people usually use them for are shut as it's Boxing Day AND they haven't turned up to use the drive 🤷‍♀️

But how is it an alibi? Leaving your car somewhere you aren't doesn't give you an alibi, surely you book a drive so you can go elsewhere

Finfintytint · 26/12/2019 16:07

It wouldn’t work as an alibi if the police do a thorough investigation but he would be relying on the possibility they might not. If the op had been away for Christmas perhaps nobody could confirm whether the car was there or.
Plus burglars are a bit dim Grin

furrytoebean · 26/12/2019 16:09

If he is the burglar he must be quite dim because he has been caught twice! In different years Confused

Sounds like you're overthinking things OP

Pogmella · 26/12/2019 16:48

He’s in theory happy to break in and steal stuff but parking illegally is a line he will not cross...? Grin

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 26/12/2019 16:49

Christ

I agree with Poopypants . Way overthinking , and he never turned up anyway

Inanothertime · 26/12/2019 22:21

Can't you reject bookings? Too late now but in future.

Inanothertime · 26/12/2019 22:22

How much does a drive space cost for 2 hrs?

furrytoebean · 27/12/2019 09:02

Not much, I think it's about £1.80 for two hours.
We usually rent it for months at a time to people who work in the offices nearby as there's not enough parking there and all the streets are permit.
