10m old still no teeth and I'm panicking

My 10 month old DD2 still has no teeth and I can't feel anything coming through either.

From what I've read online it says late teethers are usually hereditary, but DD1 cut her first tooth at 6 months so can't be that.

I also read that it's common for babies with Down's syndrome to cut teeth late... despite having the harmony test done in pregnancy and downs coming up as negative, when DD2 was born the midwives thought she might have it and requested a doctor to confirm. When the neonatologist came to look at her we got the all-clear but it was such a worrying time that the thought has never left me so reading this has me worried. DD2 doesn't look particularly Downs and has hit all other milestones (sitting, cruising, "mama" "dada" etc.), it's just she is still all gums and I'm panicking something is wrong!!

What can I do to reassure myself? Anyone have any experience to share?

My eldest son was 12 months old before he got his first tooth, don’t worry it will happen

lellikelly2 · 26/12/2019 13:05

@ABadlyShavedYeti do you have any other children? Were they all the same or were they different?

One of mine was funny till pushing 1 year- then cut four in one very very long weekend. Totally normal kid - top of the class academically and too stroppy for her own good!

I mean this kindly, but that’s not at all how heredity works. Just because one child inherits a certain tendency doesn’t mean they all will.

Thanks @Kuponut Smile

Mine youngest was nearly 12months, oldest about 6 months

MinnieMountain · 26/12/2019 13:09

DS (only child) cut his first at 12 months.

"hereditary" doesn't mean the DC will definitely do the same.

RandomMess · 26/12/2019 13:10

3 of mine were very late getting their teeth, well over a year old possible more like 14/15 months then the youngest had teeth appear overnight by 10 months

Panpastels · 26/12/2019 13:10

My eldest didn't get teeth until 12 months. She does have a chromosome disorder (not downs) but I've not heard a link between the two?
I think if you cut teeth late you tend to get adult teeth a bit later, but that's all I know.

Kuponut · 26/12/2019 13:10

One of mine got teeth early and the other didn't. The late teether lost her baby ones about the same as her peers and the earlier one is still wobbling her first loose one optimistically hoping for it to come out soon! (Later than most of her friends)

Panpastels · 26/12/2019 13:12

Why did the dr think she may have downs btw? My dd had similar eye folds to a baby with downs and I did wonder. She has a syndrome called trisomy x which didn't really affect her milestones much.

Ambrose2 · 26/12/2019 13:15

My second child cut his first two teeth just before his first birthday. No other development issues, he was early if anything

DecemberDays · 26/12/2019 13:19

My first child cut her first tooth at fourteen months and my second at six months. The older one is still waiting to get her braces fitted as not lost all her baby teeth and her friends already have theirs off... her teeth are just slow.

pinkcardi · 26/12/2019 13:21

My eldest was almost 13m and then got 3 in one week.

My youngest cut her first at 6m

Pokkadots · 26/12/2019 13:26

I didn't have teeth till I was 18 months. My son was 15 months.

ABadlyShavedYeti · 26/12/2019 13:27

My younger children all got their teeth earlier than 12 months, my eldest just had slow teeth

lellikelly2 · 26/12/2019 13:31

@Panpastels midwife thought she had downs because her eyes stayed swollen and she had a "fat" tongue Confused It was a bit of a shock to hear as we had the harmony test.

Both my dds didn't get any teeth until well after 12 months then got them all rapidly and we were done within a few months.

All of dhs family were late teethers though

firawla · 26/12/2019 13:35

One of mine didn’t get his first tooth til after one year, no medical issues just a late teether. The others were Somewhere about 6-10 months I don’t remember exactly, but I definitely wouldn’t be worried before one!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/12/2019 13:36

DD1 got her first tooth at 17.5 months. DD2 was about 10 months I think.

She lost her first tooth late. She's 8.5years old now and has only lost 8, and has 6 adult teeth. DD2 is nearly 7 and hasn't got any wobbly teeth.

Development wise... Late talker (5 words at 2y check), needed speech therapy when starting school- but she also had suspected hearing problems so speech more likely linked to that.

Panpastels · 26/12/2019 13:37

Ah right. I just googled and the harmony test should pick up the condition that my daughter has. I wish i had had it done, we didn't find out until she was 14!

Thesearmsofmine · 26/12/2019 13:38

My first cut a tooth at 6 months, my mother two were gone one before getting teeth. It’s perfectly normal, stop googling.

RandomMess · 26/12/2019 13:41

There is also mosaic Down's syndrome which I don't think a Harmony test would pick up? Although it sounds like there are no other concerns that indicate there is an issue with your DD?

HoHoHoik · 26/12/2019 13:46

My youngest DC didn't get any teeth until she was a year old when she got her two bottom front teeth and then she didn't get any other until around 18mo when she got loads one after the other. Dentist has said it isn't a problem and generally speaking the sooner they get them, the sooner they start losing them. Youngest DS was similar and he's only recently gotten his full set of milk teeth (aged 5) as his back molars were fully through at his last dental check up, we've been told that he should start losing his front ones now those back ones are in. My other two DC both started getting teeth at 6mo.

RhymingRabbit3 · 26/12/2019 13:54

10 months isn't that late. I know a few kids who didnt get their first tooth until 12months or so and then got them all in quick succession and caught up with their peers.
If you're still worried about Downs, is there a blood test you could have to confirm she isn't, just so you can stop being concerned? If she is developmentally fine, I dont think late teeth is anything to be overly concerned about.
