10m old still no teeth and I'm panicking

My 10 month old DD2 still has no teeth and I can't feel anything coming through either.

From what I've read online it says late teethers are usually hereditary, but DD1 cut her first tooth at 6 months so can't be that.

I also read that it's common for babies with Down's syndrome to cut teeth late... despite having the harmony test done in pregnancy and downs coming up as negative, when DD2 was born the midwives thought she might have it and requested a doctor to confirm. When the neonatologist came to look at her we got the all-clear but it was such a worrying time that the thought has never left me so reading this has me worried. DD2 doesn't look particularly Downs and has hit all other milestones (sitting, cruising, "mama" "dada" etc.), it's just she is still all gums and I'm panicking something is wrong!!

What can I do to reassure myself? Anyone have any experience to share?

Relax. I'm both a dentist and the mother of a child who had no teeth at all until over 18 months.

In the absence of clear signs of other conditions, we wouldn't worry about lack of teeth until around age 2. It is very, very rare to have no teeth, or to have teeth which do not erupt. Remember, babies do not read baby books, so have no idea when they are "supposed" to get teeth. They'll come when they're ready and and reaching age one with no teeth is absolutely within the normal range.

Your worry about Downs sounds like a separate issue. It seems as though you may have a lingering concern, and perhaps you need to address this separately with your HV or GP.

I have 4 kids.
First teeth were at, in birth order:
8 months
5 months
6 months
1 year (0 on her birthday, 8 on the day she turned 13 months; that was a fun month!)
All same mum and dad.
All fine academically.

My dd cut her first tooth at 13mo on a flight to Sydney 🙄 great timing. Dd2 cut hers just after 6mo, so I wouldn’t worry tbh.

DD1 was 11 months, Dd2 was 7 months, ds was 9 months.
Fair spread there. Genetic doesn't mean siblings will be identical.

I've a friend whose ds was 20 months when he got his first. He then got pretty much the whole lot in a fortnight.
She was beginning to worry though.

danni0509 · 26/12/2019 14:09

Ds cut 5 teeth in one week, the week he turned 1. Miserable for him and for me!

He got his first tooth at 9.5 months then nothing else until all those buggers showed up at the same time.

Rubychard · 26/12/2019 17:37

14 months here for ds1.

ALongHardWinter · 26/12/2019 18:44

My Dd was nearly 11 months old before she even started cutting her first tooth.

angelopal · 26/12/2019 18:49

DD1 was 13 months before she got any. DS was about 10 months.

RicStar · 26/12/2019 18:54

I have 3 dc they got first teeth at 5 months / 9 months and 13 months. 13 month old is now 17 months and has most of his baby teeth they just came in a rush.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 26/12/2019 19:09

My son was two days short of 1 before he got his first tooth. He’s 8 tomorrow and still has his baby front teeth.

BrizzleMaverick · 26/12/2019 19:20

My eldest didn't get teeth until he was 15 months old. Just enjoy not having to battle to brush them!

dillite · 26/12/2019 19:23

I only have 1DD and she didn't cut her first tooth till her 2nd birthday. One day 2 top middle ones just appeared. She was in 0 pain or discomfort. She then didn't start losing her milk teeth till she was 7.5 and has only lost 5 so far at 9.

Rowgtfc72 · 26/12/2019 19:25

Dd was 13 months. She cut her top incisors first. Looked like a little vampire Grin

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2019 19:27

Don’t panic, DS (now 11) has no teeth until the week before his first birthday, then he got 7 in 10 days!

ellesbellesxxx · 26/12/2019 19:29

I have twins: one cut his first two teeth at 9 months old, the other 14months! She also didn’t walk until 19months

sunshineandshowers21 · 26/12/2019 19:50

my nephew had no teeth at all until 15 months, then cut 7 within the last 3 weeks.

GreenGrove · 26/12/2019 19:52

My little cousin was 1 getting her first tooth

Ellathechristmasfairy · 26/12/2019 19:55

My daughter was 13 months when she cut her first tooth, the rest followed quickly.
My son who DOES have Down Syndrome cut his first tooth at 9 months.
My son has mosaic Down Syndrome, it wasn’t detected during pregnancy. You may want to have a blood test to put your mind at rest, mosaic is often very mild and there are many people walking the planet who are completely unaware that they have Down Syndrome.
My son doesn’t have many of the facial features, some people don’t actually believe me when I tell them.

user1471549213 · 26/12/2019 19:55

My eldest was 7 months. Youngest 14 months. Don't panic if that's the only reason for your panic!

CheesecakeAddict · 26/12/2019 19:57

Dd got her first ones in around 11 months but then they all came one after another.

AndAnon · 26/12/2019 19:58

DS had none on his first birthday, they all came through very quickly shortly after it. I was quite worried but assured it was totally normal.

His older sister had her first teeth quite early, I can’t remember exactly but it was before 6 months.

lilgreen · 26/12/2019 20:00

My two were both 1.

GaaaaarlicBread · 26/12/2019 20:02

I don’t have a child yet but my sister got teeth very late , she was about 13 months, I was early, first one at 5 months , and my brother was almost 1 and a half before he got teeth , also a very late walker but none of us how Down’s syndrome. Everyone is different x

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 26/12/2019 20:07

Mine got first 2 at 11months, then 4 more at 12 months and has had another 5 since (now 18 months) they didn’t come through in order either

NatureGal · 26/12/2019 20:43
