Help! Very constipated 2 year old

Merry Christmas! Really hope someone can help.

DD, just turned 2, has got terrible constipation. I can see the poo, but it won’t come out, she’s clearly in a lot of pain and I don’t know what to do.

So far I’ve tried moving her legs like she’s on a bike, massaging her stomach, nice warm bath and sugar water. I also called the out of hours pharmacy for suppositories but they do not have anything in stock. Another pharmacist opens at 4pm, but I just want to get this sorted for her now.

Any ideas?

Fresh orange or prune juice could help.

DaisyDreaming · 25/12/2019 12:51

Can you post on a local group and see if anyone has some spare suppositories? Check with the pharmacy the size and type needed

Would she eat dried apricots? They're often good for getting things moving.

Try a little Vaseline around the bum on your little finger gently. Not the most pleasant of parental jobs but did the trick with my almost 2 y/o the other day when we were in the same situation. Then loaded him with plenty of smoothies and fruit to ensure all was clear so to speak. Plenty of fluids should help too.

Pharmacies usually wont sell paediatric suppositories.
Buy adult size glycerine suppositories and cut them in half lengthways.

I would strongly recommend watching the poo nurses video to ensure that she doesn't develop a fear or witholding. It is very common for this to happen at this age after severe constipation.
Also be aware of the possibility of anal fissure.
Dried apricots can be very dangerous for constipated small children because of the risk of obstruction.
Prune juice is better.

Not sure it would help with two year old but when my Dd was a baby she suffered terribly. I found leaving her lying with no nappy on for while then holding legs in the air while wiping her bottom with warm water/cotton wool really got things moving without fail

Thank you for all your help. I will but prune juice tomorrow to keep in the cupboard. It finally came out when she was back in the bath.

@endofthelinefinally I will definitely look into that, I don’t want her to be scared or end up withholding.

Hope you all have a lovely Christmas 🎄 💩

Hope you got some results with the suggestions above, OP. If this is something that happens often, try giving her ground flaxseed - 1tsp, every morning mixed with breakfast. If you can, try to grind it yourself so you get more uneven texture than the commercially ground powder - it's the roughage factor that fixes the problem. If there is no flaxseed available, flaxseed oil will work too, but it tastes stronger than the seeds. Not unpleasant as such, just oily.

RandomMess · 25/12/2019 13:25

Warm bath hopefully will help her relax, lots of playing and distraction whilst she's in there. Always worked for one of mine and solid enough to pick out 🤢

lancslass17 · 25/12/2019 13:33

I am not kidding but has she had any chocolate today? If not try it!

KimchiLaLa · 25/12/2019 13:46

Lukewarm water
Prunes
Warm bath
Coconut oil massage
Fresh fruit squeezed in to water
Warm milk

biddybid73 · 25/12/2019 13:47

Kiwi fruit is good for constipation
Lots of fluids important too

selmabear · 25/12/2019 19:05

Fruit juice might help her go. That's the advice I was given by an out of hours nurse when it happened to my DS.

starfishmummy · 25/12/2019 21:25

Im definitely loosing the plot...

Warm bath.....Fredh fruit squeezed into water. Was wondering how on earth that would make any difference Xmas Blush
