Apple Watch or Fitbit versa for a fatty

Hopefully not a fatty for too much longer. Yes, 2020 is the year I want to be slim by summer and I want a kick up the arse - which would you recommend and why? Already an iPhone user if that helps.

I’ve just got a Fitbit charge 3, literally today. Like it so far and the battery is meant to be good, about 7 days. A friend confirms that’s about right.

I know apple watches have a worse battery life.

I had a garmin vivosport before which was perfect apart from non changeable straps and the straps have a tendency to rip and then you need to spend £100 on a whole new one.

I have an Apple watch 4 bought it in the Summer. I love it but the battery life is short about two days, however it is not difficult to charge it overnight. I also replaced the straps with some leather ones which give it a smarter look for work. I love it and would recommend I had a fit bit before but was never over impressed with it.

I dint think for quality and functions you can't beat Apple Watch....but that changes when you compare the price. However, Fitbits do have a habit of breaking after 18 months or so

Oh and unless you bank with Santander or have an obscure Mastercard like a Starling you wont be able to use the Versa for FitPay/contactless payment.

I’m really annoyed I paid £25 for the charge 3 with nfc and it doesn’t work for me as I don’t have one of those cards. You kind of assume it will work with all the mAin banks/cards.

Cheers!

So health wise, which one is best?

It depends what you want I've had 3 different Fitbit over the years and was going to upgrade but decided on a Apple Watch because it has gps which is what I wanted for running and Apple Pay .
If your not bothered about gps a Fitbit is fine as although the newer version has gps I believe.
Go with Fitbit one that's not too expensive and you can always upgrade in a year or so .the Fitbit will track everything for fitness you need .

Really depends what functionality you want. I have a Charge (can’t remember which version, maybe 2? Had it nearly 2 years). I wear it every day and the battery life is very good as others have mentioned, charge it about once a week. It picks up steps and other movements (eg going up stairs), and I like that it connects with my phone so I can see a call or text coming through. That is surprisingly useful, especially when I am out with phone in my bag so I can check before deciding whether to rummage to get my phone out. Prior to this I had another Fitbit (one of the older models, think it was a Flex) for about 2 years which I found very motivating and the Charge was a step up in terms of functionality.

However, would I buy it again? ...Probably not. As I’ve had Fitbits for years now, I’ve seen the changes in the app in particular and it feels like they’re just not giving it decent support. The features could be much better - as it stands most people integrate with other, better apps (eg for tracking food/nutrition, for capturing their weight, tracking periods etc). So basically it’s just a slightly nice and basic smart watch with a pedometer. You can get plenty of those for cheaper on Amazon.

If on the other hand you will get maximum use out of an actual smart watch, then the Apple Watch is significantly better for that and will provide loads of features in addition to the fitness side (which is reflected in the price).

I’ve had both, by far prefer my Apple Watch

VivaLeBeaver · 24/12/2019 18:20

Any of them will count your steps, count your calories burnt, count your active minutes. So allows you to monitor how much you’ve done, look back at the week/month and hopefully push yourself to do more, etc. They all have a form of exercise mode where you tell the device you’re now running/cycling/doing aerobics and then after the class/session you can look back at how many calories burnt/hr in the sesssion/time spent in fat burning zone.

I like Fitbit’s because a lot of my friends have them and on the app I can see the leaderboard and think right, I need to do another 4000 steps to beat a certain person. You can also link it to apps like MyFitnessPal and then it’ll tell you if you’re in a calorie deficit or not. Don’t know if the Apple Watch does that, quite possibly.

SouthWestmom · 24/12/2019 18:21

My Apple Watch was the most expensive mistake I've made. Has 4G so works away from the phone but I never use it.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/12/2019 18:22

Not sure if the Versa has a gps or not. My charge doesn’t but it’s not an issue as when I’m walking or cycling I always have my phone with me and it links to my phone gps. If I wanted to go running without a phone I’d need a unit with an inbuilt gps.
