Help! 5 year old. High temp. Shivers. Barking cough

Yesterday son wasn't himself. Very lethargic but we thought it may have been down to two late nights.

He went to bed then woke later boiling hot but shivering. Temp was 41.5 according to my digital thermometer but i dont know how trustworthy it is.

Gave him some ibuprofen. Seemed to kick in and help and he slept. He asked me to sleep next to him which he never asks.

He's woken this morning roasting again but temp only approx 38. Shivering still. He has a barking cough like a seal. Says his throat is very sore and was crying each time he coughed.

Currently in his pants under the duvet watching peppa pig.

Is it worth a trip to the docs or just self care at home?

Hi all.

We went to GP who sent us to the childrens ward. Just about to get out after 5.5 hours here. Nasal swabs confirmed he has flu

@cjt110 oh my word sorry to hear that but at least you went and got checked. Have they given him anything or is it just a ride it out scenario?

cjt110 · 23/12/2019 17:22

Ride it out
He also has tonsillitis

They want us to go back if he hasnt had a wee by 10am tomorrow so still not home safe per se

Oh gosh @cjt110

Poor little sod!!! Flu and tonsillitis.

Hoping for a nice big wee for him (and you)

I had tonsillitis over Xmas 3 years ago and other than flu I've never felt so ill.

Wishing you all well.

  • I'm now off to make sure my medicine cupboard is well stocked.

Also out of interest did he get his nasal spray? My reception aged child missed it as she was ill the day they sent out the consent forms. Y2 child had it though.

Wow flu and tonsillitis, good job you went!

Apple sauce is good for tonsillitis- especially if you put it in the fridge

cjt110 · 23/12/2019 17:50

@Crunchymum Yes he had it early November

Oh that's so rubbish for him. Hope he gets well soon!

Poor little pudding. Sounds the same as my 6yr old, we was up all night with what I thought was croup. Doc said he’s ear is inflamed and give him antibiotics but he says his ear isn’t even hurting. He’s not wanted food all day but is weeing and drinking. I’m really worried it’s flu, his temp is currently 39.2 so just give nurofen but I’m panicking. Should o take him Hosp or ride it out?

cjt110 · 23/12/2019 22:09

Knowing now what i know from today @Amandapandax i would take him to get checked.

My son hadnt weed for 12 hours nor really eaten (1bowl od cereal) or drunk.

If hes not himself trust your gut

He's asleep now I am going to take his temp again in a minute. What will they do if it is flu? He has been going to the toilet a lot as he is drinking plenty because he is coughing. I know I can be dramatic that's why I'm asking for advice but yes I know you're right
