En suite smells vile

Out en suite STINKS. We have tried the following Down the shower drain;
*numerous drain unblocker
*buckets of bleach
*vinegar and bi carb

  • zoflora(sp)??

We leave the window open all day also. The only thing different we do is we keep the door shut always, due to the fact it’s chemical city in there due to our constant Attempts to kill off the stench and we have two nosey cats who want to lick everything.

Is it possible the stench is so bad cause we keep the door permanently closed? Or maybe the stench isn’t coming from the shower drain?

Can you remove and clean the shower trap. I have to do this regularly

natashaaaaa · 22/12/2019 19:25

Put an upside down bowl over the plug and weigh it down with books. Stops the smell coming out.

Then when toilet paper and shove that in the sink plug and the overflow hole.

Stops the smell immediately but just a pain to remove each time you want to use shower or sink.

Is it a new build? I had this problem in my last property and tried all that you have.
Sorry, I have no advice. But just before I moved out there were some guys with big equipment clearing the drains in the street outside. I've lived in 2 new builds and builders have an awful reputation for bunging bricks, cement, loft insulation etc into the drains. It drove me mad as I was so careful to avoid.
If you have any way of contacting builders, then do. If not, just keep doing all you are doing and I hope someone comes along with a better answer. Good luck!

Have you got a pump op? Do you find water collects in the shower tray?

HeddaGarbled · 22/12/2019 19:33

It could be the basin overflow. Because it doesn’t get water through it regularly but is still damp, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Try hot water and a cleaning product to flush it out every day.

If that doesn’t work, then, yes, it’s probably the shower trap.

Halloweenbabyy · 22/12/2019 19:45

@dementedpixie I have no idea what a shower trap is 😱

@rosieposies there is always water in the pipes/drain what connects to the shower itself x

Are you sure it's the shower?
Do you have a toilet in the en- suite?

dementedpixie · 22/12/2019 19:56

In my old shower the metal top of the shower waste could be removed and a plastic cylinder shower trap could be removed to clean out hair and gunge. My current shower has the removable bits shown and these can be cleaned of hair and gunge too

Can you take a picture of your shower plug hole area

MoonlightMistletoe · 22/12/2019 20:02

Been having the same issue, gross but my hair is falling out terribly and I think it's blocking it slightly. Where the water runs down there is a cap you can pull up and out to clean, I soak that with bleach and put bleach down the plug hole and squirt the shower hose down it for a few minutes. It's worked for me so I will be doing that every few days now instead of every week.

Soda crystals are good for keeping drains clear of grease/soap scum so pour some down regularly too

MsPepperPotts · 22/12/2019 20:08

I had this in my shower.
The drain pipe had not been screwed tightly enough and was leaking waste water underneath the shower...only a small amount...but enough to cause an awful smell.
It was an easy fix once plumber.

blazerbranch · 22/12/2019 20:11

We had a slow draining sink in our en-suite. Didn't smell but similar situation. Tried numerous unblockers and regular soda crystals with no joy. Caustic soda (different to soda crystals) worked first time- I managed to get some from supermarket but can definitely get it from b and q.

Also check the drop/rise of your pipes to make sure water can escape properly. Had a pipe that was too horizontal to drain properly.

Hirsutefirs · 22/12/2019 20:34

The shower trap is a thing that lifts out of the drain hole in a modern shower tray. Hair collects in it and rots.

Is the trap that goes in it, fixed in well?

We had a really smelly en-suite (new build) and it was because the shower trap was loose. A new one got fitted that sucks in really tight and the smell went straight away.

dementedpixie · 22/12/2019 20:41

Have you got a wee cap thing that sits in there?

Halloweenbabyy · 22/12/2019 20:47

Yeah there’s a cap that goes inside with a silver lid x
