It’s sunday and we need a gas safe engineer for gas smell

We smelt gas quite strongly in room which houses the boiler, last night. The heating had been on all day. I’ve noticed a fluctuating slight smell of gas for months.
We switched off boiler and went to bed. No smell this morning.
Is it a waste of time ringing the smell gas helpline? Shall I go straight to finding an engineer, and will anyone come out on a Sunday?

Call the smell gas helpline. That's what they are there for. They'll come out and assess and think they can recommend engineers if needed

Yes just call the helpline and an emergency engineer will come out. I’ve had to do this a couple of times once in a student house and once when I got the keys to my first house. They condemned the cooker in the student house and mended the leak on the gas meter on my own house

Phone the helpline. I have done this in the past and it turned out I had a leak on the pipe going to my cooker. They came out pretty fast and sorted the issue.

How old is the boiler?

Ring the emergency gas number (usually on your meter), and they will send an engineer straight away. There's no charge for the visit.

Thanks all. Rang emergency line. We’ve had to leave the house.

Always phone the helpline. I used to work for british gas. I have been in the phone to a customer shortly after her meter exploded and burst into flame. She called us instead of 999 Hmm she could smell gas for a while leading up to it. It was a leak near the meter.

I spoke to an elderly lady who xpild smell gas who fell unconscious while we were getting her help. Lucky the ambulance was in it way the minute she said she could smell gas and was unwell. One co worker called an ambulance. The other called Transco to report the leak.

Its so dangerous. I hope its sorted and you are back in soon x
