Bugger my agas dead - 16 coming for Christmas lunch!

Help!!

Came down this morning and the aga is cold 😮

I've 16 for Christmas lunch and at this moment no bloody oven😩

Have messaged our aga engineer and keeping everything crossed he will be able to sort it out in time.

How the hell do I cook everything if he doesn't? I have 4 electric rings, no microwave and can't afford to buy an oven (and no where to bloody put it!)

I also have a wood burning stove with a flat top so I suppose I could boil veggies on that but I'm more concerned about cooking the turkey!

Any ideas wise mumsnetters? Please? 🤞

Aga is now relit and warming up thank goodness!

Burner was completely blocked with carbon so was getting no fuel through - has now been fully serviced and Christmas is saved 😊

Not sure why it's sooted up so quickly as she was serviced in October and should have been good for at least 6 months but anyway at least it wasn't the fuel pump that had failed.

Lovely engineer sorted it out quickly and is doing the mercy rounds to several other aga owners today who have had the same problem! So not just me then 😊

Thankyou for all the suggestions for cooking dinner and for calming me down somewhat!

Merry Christmas to you all Thanks

My age has been sooting up (that auto corrected to shooting up) too as have those of two neighbours. The guy who services it says it a fuel problem and that they aren't making oil fired aga's anymore and are pushing to convert to electricity Shock

Great news. Have a lovely Christmas with a fully functioning aga.

OP - glad to hear all is well.
I have an ancient oil fired Aga that also plays up unexpectedly and gets sooted up. We have an additive called Exocet added to the fuel supply which is meant to keep the Aga functioning more efficiently.

If several other nearby people have had the same issue, I wonder whether you all had a dodgy lot of fuel delivered last time.

So glad it is back with the living Smile

mateysmum · 23/12/2019 16:29

Ah, so it was a carbon issue. Same problem as I had- first time in 7 years and only 6 months since the service. It seems to be an increasingly common problem.

My engineers also blame it on the oil formulation.Apparently it has changed in the last few years to comply with eco standards, but the agas don't like it.

Glad you're all fixed,

GooodMythicalMorning · 23/12/2019 16:32

yay glad it's fixed.

You see I've heard about fuel problems with tractors and the increased biodiesel in fuel - apparently the fungus they use to make biodiesel continues to grow in the fuel and blocks filters etc and in some cases have actually wreaked the machine.

Never occurred to me that it might affect the aga - had assumed the fuel company was just trying to make money when they offered me the additive stuff 😳

Anyway lesson learned and will get the additive when we have the next oil delivery.

Just glad I now have a warm kitchen and the means to cook the Christmas dinner. 🎄

A happy and peaceful Christmas to all Thankyou
