Games consoles

I know very little about games consoles. We have an old wii which was fun for family games but they couldnt get on with it for any real games.

We were once given a very old xbox which they liked mincraft and sims on(only 2 games we have for it) but it has such a noisy fan and takes up so much space we wondered about buying something else.

I wondered about an xbox1 so they couls still play their 2 games and we could add some more?

I get the impressoon a switch is a lot more expensive and the games are? Also if the xbox people are making a mew console will the xbox1 be a bit cheaper? Her friends have a connect with theirs but google tells me thats obsolete too.

Any hints for a clueless mum. The kids arent really huge into gaming but would like to build worlds on sims, minecraft and probably would like a lego one?

Thanks.

(Not for xmas btw but in the next few months)

I use my xbox 1 about five times more than I use the switch tbh (even though I've always considered myself a Nintendo girl).

You can watch stuff on Xbox one like Netflix ect...though so maybe that is why.

Nintendo might be more geared towards younger kids but...I don't think the switch is worth it for children tbh... Maybe the handheld 'lite' version for 200...but tbh two handheld 2ds would be more worth your money if they don't have them. Or even a Wii u for younger kids.

I would say ....to go for Xbox one. Especially for kids 11+
You might find you get use out of it too.

Consoles are mostly quiet now.

Quiet is good! I think it may be because ours was 1000 years old when given to us as a chairty shop rescue (?! I know!).

Theyre 11 and 8 and not going to be into the hardcore proper games but anything fun and easy to play or building games/sims.

I feel so old even starting to look at this 😳. Would she need a subscription to play against a friend on roblox (if we even go there. Im not sure we will yet).

I dont want my kids not to be able to play games like others at the same time as being aware were not going to use any console to its potential! They had DSs but didnt really spend a lot of tiem with them after initial few months. They had tomogatchi life and a couple of other games. Maybe I ough t to have got them something else but they havent asked....

I think I would be tempted to stick with computer games by the sound of things. Sims ect are on there. Maybe hold off a few more years for a console cause when they are teens they will want one - and they will want the most modern one too!

Nintendo apparently asks for a subscription for some things but I've never needed to get one yet. Some of the games on switch eg: the professor Layton games, you can get (cheaper) on 2ds. Maybe just look into more games for that?

Not saying switch is a bad option, just in my opinion, it isn't worth the money considering the alternatives out there. I wouldn't spend it on preteens. Even though I'm sure preeteens would enjoy it.

Are you wanting to play the games you already have on a xbox 1? I don't think you can do that.

We have an xbox 360, an xbox one and tablets. It's the tablet that dd2 uses the most to play games. She doesn't like minecraft on the xbox one but plays it all the time on the tablet.

She's getting a switch for christmas.

Pinkbonbon · 22/12/2019 07:44

Xbox one will play Xbox 360 games.

But I dunno if there was another Xbox before the 360?

Cherylshaw · 22/12/2019 07:45

I'm not sure about the Xbox one as we have a PS4 but on PS4 you can pay £12 a month for a library of games to play, like Netflix but with games. I won't pay £40-£70 for a game so this works for us.
maybe something to look into?

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 22/12/2019 08:45

They prefer the xbox to the tablet for minecraft for somereason.

We don't really have a pc they can use (husband and I each have a laptop used mainly for work that they borrrow for homework) although maybe that's an option. I wouldn't have anywhere to put it though whereas a games console could be on the tv....

I had no idea about the subscription.

Xbox games seem to be 20-30quid though and the new xbox pkays old games so could buy even cheaper?

I appreciate people's help thankyou.

(40-70 a game!? Faints. We wont get the ps4 then....!)

The games theyve mentioned have been
Sims
Minecraft
Some lego world building?
Roblox (but im not sure about that and theyre not desperate)
Dance game...
Some form of racing game. Basic would be fine

The loved miitopia and tomagatchi life on the 2ds but havent played it in ages. They like thag kind of thinv though. I think they liked animal crossing on another friends game too.

The Xbox S is cheaper
