Allergic to Christmas wreath?

I know people can be allergic to anything so it’s hard to say, but has anyone else had a reaction to greenery in a Christmas wreath? My mum made us one and I don’t know whether it’s that but it’s the only thing I can think of that I’ve touched in the last day that’s unusual. My hands are covered in itchy hives and very swollen. The only other thing that’s ever done this in the past is when I’ve got undiluted fairy liquid on my hands, and it’s not been as bad as this.

Has she sprayed it with anything? Perfume or plant preserver stuff or anything else?

DramaAlpaca · 22/12/2019 01:24

No, but I do find I have reactions to random things, usually due to fragrances. In your case it could be the sap from whatever greenery she's used. Do you have any Piriton or other antihistamines in the house?

Silverflake · 22/12/2019 01:24

I don’t think so! She tends to avoid anything like that and uses eco type cleaning products and cosmetics so I’d be surprised if she’d put anything on it

@DramaAlpaca Thanks yeah I took an antihistamine last night and it settled down but I’ve just woken up as it’s started again.

Where did your mum get the ingredients from? If any of it came from a florist it might be worth asking them.

Silverflake · 22/12/2019 01:42

No it all came from their back garden I think. If I post a picture of the wreath tomorrow maybe someone who knows plants/trees on here can tell me what it’s made of and I can google if it’s known to cause reactions

Was there any sap on it? That can cause an issue to some.

I'm allergic too. Get whelps and hives. I have a lot of allergies though, so it isn't shocking for me to react to anything.

Silverflake · 22/12/2019 01:50

There may well have been! She was making loads of them and had piles of chopped up tree in the kitchen. I’m thinking fairy liquid could have something pine-y in it too and I know I’m sensitive to that

I’m allergic to ivy and that is something people can react to quite readily, often in wreaths.

Howmanysleepsnow · 22/12/2019 08:27

I react to evergreen sap and washing up liquid too.

Silverflake · 22/12/2019 09:00

Thanks @Howmanysleepsnow, I think it must be the culprit!

Bit late to the party here but pine sap is a common irritant. I always get a bad rash if I'm in contact with it. Hopefully your hives have gone down by now.
