How do I make my house smell nice?

I do try to keep my house tidy and clean (as possible with 2 kids, a husband and being 6 months pregnant) but it never has that lovely clean house smell that you notice when you go into other people's houses. I use candles, the occasional spritz of fabric freshener etc. But how do you make a house smell lovely?

Usually when peoples houses smell musty and unclean it's because of the soft furnishings and carpets. You could clean your house top to bottom but if the carpet, sofa & curtains haven't been washed it just will not smell nice.

I open windows daily.
Chuck the curtains in the washing machine every month, then hung back up to dry.
Sweep/hoover the floors and skirting boards daily. Mop regularly, daily on high use areas, a couple of days in bedrooms.
Got rid of carpets.
Regularly wash cushions and covers.
Change bedding more than once a week.
Chuck some talc into teens cheesy shoes.
Rubbish taken out daily or more if needed.
Get rid of recycling daily.
Clean kitchen/bathroom/toilet daily.
Steam clean everything around once a month when I do a deep clean.

The only chemicals I use are what I clean with.
Occasionally light a candle.
Leather sofa gets a regular vacuum of the seats, down the side/backk and underneath (same with any furniture that things can go underneath). Then a damp cloth with some soapy water, rinsed and dried. And a good leather conditioner when needed.
Cleaning windows.

Takes no time at all really because everything gets done regularly. And got rid of ornaments years ago, especially ones with fiddly bits that are hard to clean. Also got rid of things that have no useful purpose.

I have cats that you wouldn't know lived here unless you saw them or their things. Unless they've eaten something they shouldn't and just had a shit.
