Should I have a gas 'stopcock'?

Our boiler is on the blink - literally flashing an error message and we can't get it to reset. We can live without heating or hot water for the night, but is it safe to leave it like this? It's a four year old Worcester Bosch combi. It's made me think I would know how to turn the water off, but do houses have gas main taps? We have no other gas appliances.

I'm pretty sure that there is a gas mains tap next to my gas meter.

Have you put the error message into Google to see what info comes up?

Can you turn off the boiler?

My gas main was next to my gas meter.

The boiler will shut off the gas itself if it is not lit so you should be fine especially with such a new boiler. Have you checked there is enough water in the system as that is a common cause of boilers downing tools and one you can fix yourself - do you know how to repressurise your boiler?

If you do still want to turn off the gas there is usually a lever by your gas meter (not a tap) which can be turned to shut off the gas supply

Another one saying look round the meter. There should be a quarter turn lever - either just before or just after the meter.
Switching the boiler off is a good call.

Lever on the meter

MaggieFS · 20/12/2019 22:04

Ah good shout to look by the meter, thank you.

My gut feel is that the boiler knows what it's doing, and I don't want to mess further by turning the gas off. Pretty sure there isn't a gas leak, It just set me thinking. Sorry I wasn't more clear and muddled the OP. The error is either low gas supply, blocked flue or blocked condensate pipe. Going to deal with it in the morning Sad

Poor you OP. Crap time to have a boiler issue Flowers

Thanks @INeedNewShoes tell me about it!

Big fat lever located by the meter so at least I know where it is, even if it's not related to the current problem.
