Head lice - telling teacher?

PureAlchemy · 19/12/2019 17:34

Found live head lice on my Year 1 DS’s head after school.

I’ve treated his head with the lotion and combing.

If you were his teacher would you want to be informed? DH thinks we shouldn’t tell her but I’m not so sure, he must have picked the head lice up at school after all.

Of course you should I tell the school, otherwise she’ll be bringing them home again. She’s caught them from someone, most likely in the school!

Yes - at my school we hand out a standard "the lice are here" letter so that parents can check hair. It has less of a chance of spreading to others.

Won’t hurt to let the school know, although they may know already that there are lice going round.

Our school texts all parents if there are a lot of reports of head lice - like “Head lice have been reported in P5, please check your children’s hair and treat if required” - which is useful as a heads up.

Why would your DH say not to tell the teacher? Please say it’s not out of embarrassment ... head lice are so normal in classrooms (unfortunately) that it doesn’t remotely reflect on you!

Does he maybe think it’ll be extra bother for the teacher? You don’t necessarily have to go through the teacher if it’s tricky to make contact - you can just ring the office/leave a message.

It’s honestly so normal

Definitely inform the school - you don’t need to stay and talk to the teacher, you can just email the office if you prefer. They usually then send a letter or text out to advise parents to check.

Ok thanks, I’ll send a quick email to the school.

Although thinking on it, they must know there’s lice going around the school. I took the kids in through the office the other day as we were slightly late, and I saw the secretary handing a bottle of Hedrin to a parent with a nursery aged child in tow.

We get a text home to check and treat if necessary, helps to keep them at bay a little bit!

Don't forget to treat everyone in the family. Horrible thought but it's possible you or siblings could have them too.

Good point Captain, he does have a habit of sneaking into our bed in the middle of the night and snuggling up with me and DH.

Which is normally more or less fine, but not when he’s got head lice!
