Hi, DH has an EU passport, DC have UK passports, if he took them to Europe would they have to go through different queues?! Children are 5 and 8...

So’s mine Smile.

My experience is that I haven’t been asked for a permission letter even when I was travelling alone, but your experience is different. It isn’t the case that you must have a permission letter to travel.

Anyway, this wasn’t what she was asking anyway, so it’s a moot point.

Off topic - it actually is dealt with in the Australian passport but not the British one, I just looked it up!

Oz and Quill: my understanding is that both parents are required to sign to get a child an Australian passport. However, that doesn't mean that other countries will accept this, and might ask for further permission for a child to travel with just one parent.

The last few years, I have started carrying the kids birth certificates, a copy of DHs passport, and a letter from DH permitting me to travel with the kids on my own. We had a close call in Hong Kong, but they let me through. I wouldnt want a repeat of that with a slightly different outcome. You dont need a permission letter to travel (except to South Africa and Netherlands, I think), however if passport control start querying things, it can be a very useful thing to have.

Inarightpickleandpreserve if DH is traveling with the kids on his own, look into getting a permission to travel letter - there are templates on the web, and carrying the kids birth certificates.
