We've been bitten by the period drama bug! In the past few weeks, we've binge watched Pride and prejudice, Sense and sensibility, North and South, War and Peace, as well as all of Downton!

We've got Prime, iPlayer and 4od etc. What should we watch next?

Wives & Daughters. It was a BBC one in about 1998. I loved it, no idea if it's available online though, I have it on DVD.

Little Dorrit. Dickinson. Gentleman Jack.

Middlemarch (starring Rufus Sewell in breeches)
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell if you can find it (nobody watched it but it was brilliant)

Sanditon, Emma (there are several versions), Victoria. Victoria & Abdul, Gosford Park which are both films. Also, there is a film of Sense and Sensibility and a mini series. Both are worth watching, but the film with Alan Rickman is superior, because, you know, it's Alan Rickman.

Persuasion, several versions again, but my favourite is the one with Rupert Penry-Jones.

Lark Rise to Candleford and Cranford are both very watchable, as is The Tudors.

Not sure which of these are available on your tv services, though.

Just popping in to say I totally thought this thread was about something else...

Yep I thought it was going to be a teenage girl refusing to go to school for one week a month Grin

BeardedMum · 18/12/2019 20:27

EM Forster. That’s period drama isn’t it? Maurice, Howard’s end...

Binglebong · 18/12/2019 20:59

Tea with Mussolini.

Wildthyme · 18/12/2019 21:21

Dickensian is very good on Netflix. Every Dickens character living near each other and set before the beginning of each book.

doadeer · 18/12/2019 21:28

Fanny Price, Vanity Fair, Northhanger Abbey

doadeer · 18/12/2019 21:31

Doh not fanny Price she is from Mansfield Park... I meant Fanny Hill

Greenglassteacup · 18/12/2019 21:31

The Forsyte Saga
Small Island

Can you get The Pallisers? 1970s TV, forget whether it was Beeb or ITV.
If you want a really good binge-watch for the long dark evenings it's 24 episodes! From 6 novels by Victorian Anthony Trollope. Has everything from an heiress being married off against her wishes, to murder. There's a political background to much of it, but to me it was thoroughly addictive. Very first episode starts a mite slow but don't let that put you off.

The Forsyte Saga is another really good one to get stuck into.
Ditto upstairs, Downstairs and The Duchess of Duke Street - again all old but really well worth a watch. And no mumbling, like in more modern ones.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/12/2019 22:23

Oh, and The Way We Live Now, another Trollope, very well done by the Beeb at least 10 years ago. David Suchet brilliant as the main (crooked) character.

I really enjoy Hornblower, though I accept I may be in the minority there.....

chocolateteapot20 · 19/12/2019 00:12

If you've got Netflix, what about Anne with an 'E' or When Calls the Heart? Hours of lovely escapism.

And two more votes for Middlemarch and Dickensian.

Palavah · 19/12/2019 00:14

Moll Flanders

A Dance to the Music of Time

And - not literary but cheesy classic -
The House of Elliott

Binglebong · 19/12/2019 00:22

Doctor Thorn on ITV a few years ago was really sweet. And I enjoyed the much slated revival of Upstairs Downstairs and had a crush on the chauffeur.

doadeer · 19/12/2019 05:49

Sharpe!

Sorry not sure which are on Prime. I think I bought Sharpe when I was heavily pregnant and housebound with PGP!

Greenglassteacup · 19/12/2019 08:37

The Cammomile Lawn!

Reign on Netflix

DingDongMerrilyOnThigh · 19/12/2019 08:50

Not sure what's on which service, but there's loads of these on BritBox - we're just trying it now, it's got a really well thought out interface so it's easy to find stuff.
