I've always been a bit (lightheartedly) sneery about musical theatre being too 'over-dramatic' (rolling my eyes at myself here), but DP dragged me to watch a show a couple of months ago, and I'm now completely obsessed!

Here are some songs I love:

Somewhere that's Green from Little Shop of Horrors
Suddenly Seymour from LSoH
Dyin' Ain't So Bad from Bonnie and Clyde
Ex Wives from Six
She Used to be Mine from Waitress
What Baking Can Do from Waitress
Impossible; It's Possible from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella
Take Me or Leave Me from Rent

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might like? Thanks! Grin

Have you seen the greatest showman? I'm also mildly obsessed with Evita

(Lion King) Be My Guest (Beauty and the Beast) All in this together/breaking free (High School Musical) sisi ne sawa (Lion King junior) (we are the same) Sit in the sun/Said we wouldn’t look back (Salad days) One Day More (Les Mis) America (West Side Story) Belgium put the kibosh on the Keiser or Chirstmas Pudding song (Oh What a Lovely War) The things we have thunk (Suissical the Musical)

I can continue...

Go back to the classics: Chicago and Cabaret are marvellous for stonking tunes with barbed wit. Especially We Both Reached For the Gun from Chicago and Mein Herr and 'If You Could See Her (The Gorilla Song)' from Cabaret.

I was always a fan of musicals but Hamilton has taken them to another level imo; Satisfied/My Shot

fairygodbaker · 18/12/2019 15:53

Thanks for all the suggestions! Haven't heard most of those so will definitely be filling up some new Spotify playlists. Grin

Furrybootsyecomfy · 18/12/2019 16:05

Yes to Satisfied and My Shot, also love Guns and Ships, History Has It’s Eyes On You and One Last Time.
Inutil, Pacience Y Fe and It Won’t Be Long Now from In The Heights.
You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen
I Believe from Book Of Mormon (if you’re not offended by language)
What Do You Do (With A B. A. In English) from Avenue Q
Heaven On Their Minds from Jesus Christ Superstar
Seasons Of Love from Rent
Yes to lots of the above as well- I love musicals!

DarlingNikita · 18/12/2019 16:11

Oh, and one song has been mentioned, but Matilda has lots of really clever, funny, witty songs.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 18/12/2019 17:35

Dear Officer Krupke from West Side Story
Rhythm of Life from Sweet Charity
There's gotta be something better than this from Sweet Charity
Steam Heat from The Pyjama GameDear
Defying Gravity from Wicked
And everything that Doris Day songs in Calamity Jane

DarlingNikita · 18/12/2019 17:39

Oh God yes, Gee Officer Krupke is a stone-cold classic.

Make 'Em Laugh from Singin' in the Rain has also come to mind, but it's best in the context of the film, for the choreography and performances.

Witches of Eastwick...I wish I may

PiggyPlumPie · 18/12/2019 17:47

Cabaret - can really belt out "when I go, I'm going like Elsie!"

There are so many great songs to choose.

Chess has a great soundtrack that I think is often overlooked.

NoHummus · 18/12/2019 17:48

If you don't already, get BBC Sounds and listen to the Elaine Paige on Sunday show. It's introduced me to so many great new songs and shows!
