I have to buy 2 gifts for an 8 and 10 year old. Any advice as to what to get would be very welcome.

Our son loves this book: www.dk.com/us/book/9780241358566-how-to-be-a-coder/
Its about the concepts of coding and teaches you how to program in Scratch (a block-based visual language developed by MIT), its a great intro for children.

There's a board game called Rush Hour, which is not about coding, but is a logic game which uses the same thought processes. There are several variations on it from the basic game to several add-ons and levels of difficulty. It can be played alone, or
I bought it for my DN a few years ago, and he LOVSES it. He and his sister play it a lot - it's small and portable and often used when travelling!

I am watching this thread with interest, I have a 4 almost five year old and I know she would love something where she could code (in the broadest sense!) - I've seen toys like a Fisher price caterpillar etc

We are getting our dd7 an Artie 3000 - a robot who draws based on code.

hookiwooki · 17/12/2019 09:08

I quite fancy Botley the Coding Robot, but it's a bit out of DD's ability at the moment so I'm holding off until next year. Not sure how good he would be at 8 and 10 years, but I suspect there must be something similar available with an older age bracket that would suit.

I have bought Rush Hour for a party game for Christmas. We have a huge range of ages so I am thinking this could be a good team party game.

I've bought the Turing tumble that was mentioned on here, arrived yesterday but obviously don't know how good it is yet! I think ds will love it...

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 17/12/2019 12:29

bsc - may I ask when you ordered the TT and how long it took to arrive? We are still waiting for ours (and now getting a bit nervous!).

bsc · 17/12/2019 12:35

Ordered a couple of weeks ago, shipped by APC at the weekend, arrived early yesterday.
If you've ordered already, check your email- mine went into 'promotions' not inbox in my Gmail.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 17/12/2019 12:59

Thanks for the info. No, no junked email. I'll contact them tomorrow if nothing arrives today.

bsc · 18/12/2019 18:30

Did it arrive today MacCavity?

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 18/12/2019 19:48

Thanks for asking bsc! No, but I've now had the dispatch notification from the carrier and it's due on Friday. I'm quite excited about it actually! Grin

bsc · 18/12/2019 20:13

Smile well, I've opened the packaging, and it looks amazing... haven't opened the box though of course.

MoodLighting · 18/12/2019 20:34

Ooh I'd love to hear what you think of the Turing Tumble, it's been on my watch list for ages.

bsc · 18/12/2019 21:25

Sorry mood, but it won't be opened for another week yet!

MoodLighting · 18/12/2019 22:21

Haha I hope not! I must say I'm probably keener than my 5 yo. Too old to ask Santa though!

ineedaholidaynow · 18/12/2019 22:24

We're thinking about getting a Raspberry Pi
