Just to let you all know that Ovo energy is owned by a Tory donor

One of the many joys of this election was finding out that the energy company I use, Ovo, which is supposedly dedicated to green energy is owned by a massive Tory donor, who has also owned several F1 racing teams.

I will be changing supplier asap. Just thought people might be interested.

OP posts:

What an utterly ridiculous thing to post. Your views clearly match you user name.

Cheesecake53 · 15/12/2019 19:36

Thank you for posting this, OP, I will change suppliers, too. Ignore the troll :)

Kez200 · 15/12/2019 19:50

Me too. Once I am out of contract

Singlenotsingle · 15/12/2019 19:50

I'm with Bulb. I'll move to Ivo tomorrow.

ByAppointmentTo · 15/12/2019 19:57

And? I'm not sure that I see the problem. If you're happy with the service and price why would you switch?

Lulualla · 15/12/2019 20:01

This is like The Good Place. I'm sure if you look hard enough then you wont be able to buy any food, clothes or toiletries or use any sort of amenity because somewhere down every train is a dick.

FizzyGreenWater · 15/12/2019 20:07

Singlenotsingle totally do it, you should move to Ivo

I hear they are great Grin

Somanysocks · 15/12/2019 20:08

How reasonable you sound Hmm

So what?

Somanysocks · 15/12/2019 20:13

Let's hope you're employed by the correct side then because by those ethics there will be a lot of unemployed people out there.

Fleetheart · 15/12/2019 20:14

OVO is now one of the big 6. Much as I don’t love the Tories, I do think that OVO have done a great job and I don’t see why their founder shouldn’t donate to whom he wishes.

AmIthechristmasfairy · 15/12/2019 20:24

So?

@Cheesecake53 What troll are you talking about?

Do you mean someone whose views don't match yours?

pollyputthepastaon · 15/12/2019 20:32

Thank you, I will switch to Ovo once my current contract is up.

Elbowedout · 15/12/2019 20:34

I don't think there is anything unreasonable about not wanting to help line the pockets of someone that you fundamentally disagree with OP. The difficulty will be finding any supplier that doesn't have any elements you disagree with unfortunately, so you may have to compromise on something.
I think lots of people do assume that green or organic companies will have a particular political stance or be more ethical than other companies but it isn't necessarily so. Take the baby food company Hipp for example. I have heard many people say they must be ethical kecause they are organic, but in fact they breal the International Code on the Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes regularly and in pretty much the same ways as the bigger manufacturers. Basically all companies want to make money and picking one is often about choosing the least bad rather than the best. You may find another energy company which doesn't have political affiliations that you disapprove of but which is considerably less green than Ovo which I guess could be a hard choice for you. It is always good to be informed though.
I have already crossed Ovo off the list of potential providers for our next change but I must confess it is for less noble reasons - I'm angry with them for dropping their sponsorship of the Tour of Britain.
I hope you find an energy provider that you feel more comfortable with soon.

Nixen · 15/12/2019 20:38

Oh good, he’ll be my new boss soon ☺️

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/12/2019 20:53

I don’t care if Satan owns it as long as it’s cheap.

BingoLittlesUncle · 15/12/2019 22:04

As a previous poster said, so what?

Ilovelucyy · 15/12/2019 23:32

Great to know. Better than donating to Mermaids or Stonewall!

Whatsacill · 15/12/2019 23:34

F1 are aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030... wonder if that’s influenced by Mr Ovo... if so, good for him!

FizzyGreenWater · 16/12/2019 00:04

I just speed read that as 'FIL is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030' Grin

Tolleshunt · 16/12/2019 00:08

YANBU to want to spend your hard-earned cash with those who behave in ways that accord with your values. Trouble is, as pp say, it can be so hard to find companies that are completely ethical.

rockingchaircandle · 16/12/2019 01:23

I think the amount of money billionaire Tory donors spend on targeted campaigns, is the anti-democratic thing here.

And that's the money & influence we know about!

notangelinajolie · 16/12/2019 01:52

the energy company I use, Ovo, which is supposedly dedicated to green energy is owned by a massive Tory donor, who has also owned several F1 racing teams

....and that's good/bad because?

OP you can't announce something and then not say why you agree/disagree with it

I'm all for keeping it brief and to the point but we really aren't mind readers you know.

Are you saying we shouldn't drive cars if we use Ovo? Or perhaps Tory donors shouldn't drive formula one? Or Tory formula one drivers shouldn't have Ovo?

Too many variations here please be more specific.
