Ds2 has been very ill the last week with chest infection but on the mend. Now ds1 (who really, really doesn’t ‘do’ Ill very well as he is autistic is coming down with a cold. We go away in a week and want to do my best to help ds1 and to try to prevent me getting ill as I’m on my own with them.

Of course good hygiene goes without saying, hand washing etc etc. Having ecchinecea which helps, have multi vitamins etc. Anything else?

Nope.
Just wash my hands often. and avoid germy people

ChristmasCroissant · 14/12/2019 21:33

Wiping down the doors and door handles - I do that when someone has a cold. Echinacea seems to work (although it is only recommended for 12 and over now) as well as Vitamin C and Zinc - Zinc is good for sore throats.

Hope you manage to avoid the germs, OP!

good hygiene (handwashing!)
good nutrition (+ vit d3 supplement)
exercise (at least one hour a day preferably outside in daylight)
enough rest/sleep

Vicks first defense has never failed us.

Wonderingwhyme · 14/12/2019 21:36

Sleep is a trouble.... ds2 hasn’t slept much past 3am without waking me for a week now and coughing all through the night so I’m knackered and today have a migraine! He’s on the up but not ds1 is going down hill and he is autistic and a nightmare when il! I have agitated d spray but haven’t used it for awhile..prob need a new one!

Vicks works for me but ds1 won’t tolerate it up his nose....annoyingly.

I don’t know if it helps but we wash our hands regularly and eat lots of oranges and satsumas and home made soups in the winter.

Wonderingwhyme · 14/12/2019 21:46

Good shout for soup, will make some more tomorrow thanks. Ds1 won’t eat oranges. He really isn’t an easy patient to deal with!

I find probiotics really help me avoid colds

JMAngel1 · 14/12/2019 21:48

No sugar, exercise, loads of green veg and fruit, water.

Drum it into your children to wash their hands when they come in from school/hobbies/playing out. When they go to the toilet, before they eat. When they blow their nose, when they sneeze. Have them always carry tissues in their pocket for sneezes and runny noses. Have them cover their mouths for every cough and sneeze.

Air the house out every day with windows opened enough to get a breeze going through to clear out stage air. Particularly bedrooms.

Wash hands and face, especially around your mouth and nose, as soon as possible after travelling on public transport.

Grapefruit seed extract from Higher Nature.

Pretty sure it's hand washing here. I've made sure DD is pretty hot on it (compared to some of her friends I've noticed during play dates) and she often escapes things. Especially D&V illness.

I work outdoors in my own. However, every time DGS (2) kisses me I get a slight sniffle. He's a fountain of snot.

Wonderingwhyme · 15/12/2019 08:37

Thanks everyone. I do most of these things, I guess I need to admit defence this time! We aren’t a sicky family so I guess when we are ill it seems worse! I have all the windows open now too. I know sleep is a big factor for me. Today I have the first defence already sprayed, ecchinecea in, taken a vit c,d and zinc dissolvable thing and drilling in about tissues and hand washing Grin both asthmatic so we all have the flu vaccine each year too. I may just take with me cold remedies etc just in case I end up ill too!

Avoid touching your own eyes and nose. I used to rub my eyes all the time, and I'd catch colds all the time.
