We are going to our local shopping centre tomorrow and planning to get our daughter to choose a tag off the giving tree (each tag is the sex and age of a child in need) and get her to go and buy a gift for her. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of a letter to leave with the money from our elf on the shelf to do this?

so you want to use some fictional 'elf' as leverage to get your kid to do something charitable??

BigFatLiar · 14/12/2019 20:24

How old is your daughter? As she has an elf presumably still believes in Santa, wouldn't it be odd for the elf to be asking her to buy a present for someone when its Santa that gets presents? Wont Santa get the other girl her present.

Its a nice idea anyway, could the elf say he'd heard from his mates of someone needing a special present and as he couldn't go get it could she get it for him.

Oh god!
Only on Mumsnet could you ask for advice for something good and get judged.

My daughter is 6, she does believe in Santa still but knows that some children aren't as lucky as she is and I don't think she would question it.

We regularly sort out toys for charity shops and we talk about those in need so it's not using the elf to bribe her to do something charitable just I thought it would be a nice idea.

So just ask her opinion then?

Why does the elf have to be involved at all? I find it weird and won’t drive home much of a message

She decides herself= she’s showing and feeling empathy
Elf tells her to=she’s following expectation like a sheep!

Have you tried Pinterest, OP? There's loads of elf stuff on there. I've only got a toddler, so we're moving the elf about very sporadically, but I'm sure they'd have the kind of thing you're looking for.
