Are there any really interesting polling stations?

Probably not I’m guessing. The ones in my town are in a rugby club and a bowls club. Ds disappointed as his mates from the nearby village got the day off as their school was being used.

Anyone got an interesting place where they vote?

I’m not entirely sure why but every election my polling station is a demountable type temporary building with a portaloo for the staff. I’m not sure why they don’t utilise one of the many community centres or church halls in the vicinity; there are loads of them!

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain · 12/12/2019 15:55

llareggub they did similar in the last village I lived in. Spent a week constructing a portakabin type thing in the car park of the village hall. I’m assuming there must’ve been some big falling out years ago but I never got the gossip.

Ours is in the church, but it's not very interesting...

Not sure how interesting people will find this Grin but mine is a community centre/hall (tinier than those terms suggest) on a housing estate. Outside election times it's used for lots of activities including a Zumba class that I sometimes go to. Makes me smile to go in at election time and remember us all frugging and sweating away in there!

Just read the live news feed on BBC website and there's a little piece on unusual polling stations. One is a train carriage, so yes, there are unusual ones!

lifeisgoodagain · 12/12/2019 15:59

The reason some are in portacabins is money and/or previous bookings. It costs £340 to rent our hall for the day!

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 12/12/2019 16:00

This used to be my polling station - it was built in the 14th century as a dining hall for the Vicars Choral of the local cathedral.

One is a Windmill Smile

Rubychard · 12/12/2019 16:09

According to the bbc, one in rural wales is in a chip shop.

Meandyouandyouandme · 12/12/2019 16:10

The polling station where I used to live was in a church called Ivy Church, and the stained glass was all ivy leaves, it’s beautiful. Now I get to vote in a prefab unit that’s definitely seen better days. Have moved from a wealthy area to a poorer one!

DarlingNikita · 12/12/2019 16:33

Only, that's gorgeous.

I'd LOVE to go and vote in a chip shop Grin

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 12/12/2019 16:35

Mines the bowls club, my parents used to be a hotel, its now a pub 3 doors away from the hotel.

scissy · 12/12/2019 16:41

Ours is a portakabin assembled in the school car park. Either that, or close a school for 800 pupils for the day... I'll take the portakabin thanks Wink.

FakeChristmasTreesaremynewnorm · 12/12/2019 16:44

Ours is in the fire station.

FruityWidow · 12/12/2019 16:50

Mine is at a Serbian Orthodox church

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/12/2019 16:52

Village hall here.

DeathMetalMum · 12/12/2019 16:52

Portacabin in a local supermarket. Not ours but another wards polling station. I was rather surprised when I went to the supermarket this afternoon it was chaos parking.

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain · 12/12/2019 16:54

Ooh, I didn’t know there was BBC article, I’ll have a look at it now. I was surprised that the rugby club was open as usual today, it’s odd voting next to people having a pint.

Mine is a village hall.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 12/12/2019 16:58

I'm sure I recall seeing an article where one was in someone's front room

Finfintytint · 12/12/2019 16:59

We have two in our village. One is in a school and the other is in a village hall. Our village has different parties according to which half you live in.

loveisanopensore · 12/12/2019 17:04

When I lived in London it was the community centre at the end of the road. Usually used for parties there was always a disco ball above me as I completed my ballot paper.

Cherrypi · 12/12/2019 17:04

There one on Instagram earlier that was a foodbank!

HardAsSnails · 12/12/2019 17:05

Mine is in a room at a local charity premises, which is in part of what used to be an old woollen mill and associated buildings, they support elderly people with dementia, so it's full of old furniture, ornaments and stuff they use to create therapeutic spaces. It's a lovely space, like a very clean and ordered Aladdin's cave type junk shop, set in a beautiful old building.

WooMaWang · 12/12/2019 17:05

In my old house, the polling station was in a local pub.
