Neuropathic pain

I had recently been diagnosed with neuropathic pain most probably due to fibromyalgia but undergoing investigation. So far, I have avoided all pain medication. I am worried about becoming addicted and also about my tolerance to pain. But now I'm thinking I'm being a bit foolish and could be in pain less frequently or not at all. It does worry me when I read side effects such as weight gain or suicidal thoughts. What are your experiences of different medications? I have t had a chance yet to chat through with my GP, only my consultant letter suggesting gabapentin and some other options.

I take amitriptyline and naproxen daily for this. Haven't had any nasty side effects whatsoever and they're actually very good.

I've been taking gabapentin for nerve pain for over 5 years now and am not addicted to it. It gives me good pain relief. I can take less on days I'm in less pain and not have withdrawals.
