Leslie Ash on TV this morning

I happened to see Leslie Ash on TV this morning saying her career ended when she became disabled because of getting a hospital superbug.

My memory is that her career ended, years before the illness, when she had lip fillers that went terribly wrong and she became the poster girl for the trout pout.

Sadly her face still looks very strange and could barely move her lips during the interview. I think it is a bit disingenuous of her to claim her career came to a halt when she became disabled, which is totally dreadful in itself, but not exactly the real reason as to why she could not find work anymore

The fact is, she was on National TV this morning, claiming (lying) that being disabled has destroyed her career, when in fact it was the unfortunate botched lip fillers which ended her career prematurely.

The interview was about her being 'discarded' because she was disabled and wanting to highlight that she is grief stricken about it.

I think if she had been on TV today saying, 'the botched cosmetic surgery was the cause my acting opportunities drying up and then a few years later I was left disabled and have been struggling to get a career going again since I recovered', it would have been much more authentic and genuine.

The revision surgery on her lips has definitely improved matters, but unfortunately it has not reversed the damage, nor has it made her mouth look natural.

I think what annoys me a bit about her scenario is that she wasn't a great actress to begin with. I mean, she's ok, I dont dislike her but she's nothing amazing and she was never gonna win an Oscar. Her role in men behaving badly was mainly due to her looks- she was the "token pretty girl" to complement Caroline's "funny girl". So, its a bit disingenuous for her to claim her career was over due to her illness. It wasn't. Her career was over due to her poor choice in plastic surgery which left her looking like a fraggle rock puppet. Plus the fact she was never an "amazing" actor in the first place. Plenty of actresses over 40 have expressed how hard it is to get roles in what is still a male dominated industry. I do feel very sad for her for what she's been through, but I dont believe for one second if she hadn't been ill she'd be making hollywood movies or headlining a prime time TV show.

It is debatable which is causing the career problems at this point, isn't it?

She sees it the way she sees it. Calling her a liar is a bit strong.

Don't feel much sympathy for her, tbh

Well aren't you a kind soul Hmm

Nah- her career was over WAY before she got ill. She became a laughing stock in the press- she was the poster girl for the phrase "trout pout" and at the time I remember papers would post her picture alongside photos of gulping fish etc Yes, it was cruel and yes, it was vicious, but unfortunately it did affect her career in a very negative way because her lips looked completely ridiculous. It changed the shape of her entire face, which for an actress is pretty catastrophic. She's had a terrible time and I'm glad she's come out of it ok but her career stalling was down to her botched lips.

I think what sat badly with me was claiming it was "energetic sex".
Im not good with words but almost as if this was a great sex life and just a hazard of that, when it clearly wasn't.
Teenagers reading that and thinking it was ok?
No.

I have read the Guardian piece and the venture she is plugging is a website sourcing writing to be adapted into film. So it is very much about creating work for herself and others.

This is actually a really unpleasant thread.

I can name quite a few actresses who work despite obvious cosmetic work. I wonder if the naysayers here can name as many working disabled actresses?

It is an issue worth highlighting.

At the time, it struck me as a raunchy version of "I walked into a door". So sad for her. I admit I am bemused she is still with him. Their sons must be approaching 30.

From wiki: Ash has since spoken out about the press ridicule she received as a result of her botched implants, commenting: "If I'd lost a leg in a car crash, people wouldn't have felt able to take the mickey out of me so mercilessly....People don't laugh at Heather Mills because she lost a leg."[15]

Now, I'm sorry but losing a leg in a car crash is not remotely the same as having your lips done by someone you didnt research properly. I think this is a really shitty comment of her to make.

Yes, but why use that excuse?
Why not, "I slipped in the shower"?
It really put me off her.

She sused the NHS for €5 million as she said she would never be able to work in the acting profession again and that would cover what money she could have earned.
Thing is she has a acting work since ironically in Causally and other shows.
That's why I've no time for her.

Do people have epidurals for cracked ribs? That's what she thinks is the cause of the MSSA.

It's a very sad tale all round, whatever ended her career it must be dreadful for that to happen to you.

Jesus, Mary & Joseph. You were "put off" a (possible) DV victim, who at that point was helpless in a hospital bed, because you didn't "approve" of the exact choice of fib she was telling to (possibly) shield her (alleged) abuser?

Maybe he was telling her what to say? Maybe she just said the first thing that came in her head? Nobody believed it anyway. The papers made their scepticism very clear.

She got £5million for her lack of earnings. So no I don't feel sympathy. She's bleating on about her lack of career but she was heavily financially compensated.

Most people can only dream of having £5 million in their lifetime.

I'll save my sympathy for those who suffer life changing events and still have to earn a living, thanks all the same Confused

She wasn't in a hospital bed, or disabled when I read it, I'm not that callous.
I hope they are happy now since they've stayed together.

I saw her in the flesh so to speak after the trout pout, a few years after. She looked like she had more surgery after the botched lips. She didn't really learn a lesson.

@beautifulstranger101, have you read the thread? She's never once claimed this. What she's talking about is contracting a life-threatening infection, being extremely ill, and waking up unable to walk. Is that comparable enough to being in a car crash for you?

Report
betaboo · 11/12/2019 07:30

@equanimitas, No, it actually was about the botched lip implants, not about contracting MRSA.

"Ash has since spoken out about the press ridicule she received as a result of her botched implants, commenting: "If I'd lost a leg in a car crash, people wouldn't have felt able to take the mickey out of me so mercilessly....People don't laugh at Heather Mills because she lost a leg."

You could argue it was her husband who ended her career by “knocking her off the bed” during the “rough sex” that put her in the hospital she acquired the MRSA from that (she claims) killed her career.

People who stay with abusers have their lives ruined in a massive and humongous variety of ways, and I believe this is a case in point.

That just tells you how much it affected her emotionally, psychologically.

For someone whose life, career, sense of worth is wholly bound up in their appearance I imagine this would seem to be a reasonable comparison.

Look at some of the comments here.... all about her only being 'a pretty little thing', all about denigrating her acting ability etc.

@Equanimitas NO- she was talking about her LIP FILLERS and comparing them to losing her leg, not her hospital injuries. Its a crappy , selfish thing to say and I wonder if after she did go into hospital she realised what a dumb thing it was to say

@curiousaboutsamphire of course people are going to question her acting ability- she was awarded 5 million by the NHS (which we pay for) for "loss of earnings". The fact is- she's only really been in two things anyone can remember- MBB and the film Quadrophenia. She isn't a great actress. IDK why its not acceptable to say that about her but it is about other actors. I dont think for one moment she would have earnt 5 million had she not had the accident because as I said before, her career was already ruined due to the lip fillers.

WTF is happening to this place. WIll it change when all the tories go after the election? a woman being abused decides to have cosmetic surgery to build up her pobably non existant self esteem and that makes her seemingly a digrace to some people?
