Northern General Hospital (Sheffield) - Parking

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2019 09:03

DH has an appointment at the Northern General tomorrow morning at 10am. Our rural public transport won’t get him there, so he’s driving (he is ok to drive there and back).

Can anyone advise on parking at/near the hospital?

Look on the website, there is a map that shows you all the car parks. I will warn you that there isn't much parking & it isn't cheap to park.

Aragog · 10/12/2019 19:54

The parking there is a nightmare. Ive had a few appointments there recently and have never yet managed to park in the actual car parks. Its easier to park on the road, just outside of the site. Does he know which entrance he needs?

TooleyVanDooley · 10/12/2019 19:57

He might be best to get there before 9, and treat himself to breakfast before his appointment

MrsT1405 · 10/12/2019 20:44

It's a really huge site and very spread out, so leave a lot of time.

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2019 20:45

Thanks everyone. He has to go with an empty stomach TooleyVanDooley.

In that case, car park E is the one that tends to have spaces after the others have filled up. I don’t think I would leave until close to 10 though. And, yeah, the site is huge and it can be a long walk to wherever he needs to get to.

Khione · 10/12/2019 20:56

There are pay car parks on site and although they are busy I have always managed to get parked. Easier if he's in a smallish car as the spaces aren't huge
Parking on the road outside gets parked up before the car parks as the staff park there as they don't want to pay inflated parking charges on a daily basis.

You do need to be mobile in any event - parking isn't close and it's a hugely sloping site.

Veterinari · 10/12/2019 21:00

Take cash - it’s pay and display with no option to pay by card and no change given - it’s like the dark ages!

Alternatively if he gets there earlyish he might be able to snaffle a free spot outside on Barnsley road.

TooleyVanDooley · 10/12/2019 21:14

You can pay by app now!

Ginfordinner · 10/12/2019 21:16

There are several car parks, and if you get there early you should be OK. We are very familiar with the GI department and usually park in the car park near the Huntsman building. Good luck with the appointment.

Who is he seeing?

GwenCooper81 · 10/12/2019 21:19

Personally I'd get him to park at the Tesco on Herries Road and either walk or catch the number 20 or 83 bus down. It'll drop him outside and he can walk through. The roads are clogged from early morning.

GwenCooper81 · 10/12/2019 21:22

Sorry, I making the assumption that's its via Herries entrance. If not I'd get him to go early and try to park Barnsley Road and walk through the Barnsley Road entrance. It's a massive site, I'm sure there's s a map online somewhere.

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2019 21:39

Funnily, DH has actually engaged with what he is doing tomorrow and has found a map, and some instructions about where to park where to go etc.. Top tips about Tesco, parking app, no cash etc though!!

@Ginfordinner- he doesn’t know who he is seeing. He’s been referred from Barnsley Hospital.

Aww that's fab! If he parks at tesco there's a most excellent chippy he can call into all being well when he's done :)

Nat6999 · 10/12/2019 22:40

Herries road is usually full up with staff parking. The big carpark as you go through the Herries Road Entrance is his best bet if he can walk.

Ginfordinner · 10/12/2019 23:07

We usually go in via the Barnsley Road entrance to get the the car park near the Huntsman building. If you go in via the Herries Road entrance you have to drive all the way round the hospital grounds first.

If you are coming from the north of Sheffield it is much quicker to come down the M1 and get off at Meadowhall, then turn right just after Forgemasters onto the A 6102.

Nat6999 · 11/12/2019 11:27

I normally go past the royal mail depot, along upwell street & Fir vale then turn right up Herries Road.

BikeRunSki · 11/12/2019 13:29

He got there at 8.27 and still ended up parking on the road outside, about 3/4 mile away. He needs to go back tommorow, but he knows the ropes now.

OP posts:
Ginfordinner · 11/12/2019 17:35

Oh, that's rubbish for him. Our hospitals never have enough parking.

BikeRunSki · 11/12/2019 18:19

Ah, thanks @Ginfordinner.

He didn’t actually see a doctor. A clever nurse. He is walking around with a tube down his throat feeling very sorry for himself.

OP posts:
Ginfordinner · 11/12/2019 19:24

That sounds unpleasant. I hope his problem can be resolved quickly

Veterinari · 11/12/2019 19:31

Sending good wishes
