What are you all using puff pastry for???

First world problem I know, but Ocado is sold out of every kind of puff pastry. I'm betting lots of you must have ransacked them of their stock and there isn't a national shortage.

What are you making with it????

I shall venture out to a proper shop tomorrow because I don't have the butter (or the will) to make my own pastry. I was planning to make my own sausage rolls but I'd like some inspiration for something more interesting if you'd be so kind as to indulge me.

Mince pies.

Also homemade sausage rolls.

nitgel · 09/12/2019 18:40

I wrap it around chicken breasts

ActualHornist · 09/12/2019 18:41

Sausage rolls of course!

Mum has already made 260 in preparation for Xmas!

Plenty in Aldi this evening if you're OK with slumming it.

I use it to make tuna and cheese pasties. I got the recipe on here years ago and my kids love them.

Rewilderness · 09/12/2019 18:41

I’m making onion tarts but with the gluten free puff so don’t think I’ve contributed to the crisis.

THe shortage started about 6 months ago when the jus-roll frozen block disappeared from Sainsburys Waitrose and Tesco

babbi · 09/12/2019 18:46

Just got 6 from the Coop on markdown @ 10 p each !
Now in freezer for Xmas and New Year buffet snacks .
No shortage here 😀

Patapouf · 09/12/2019 18:48

@foamrolling I'd happily relieve Aldi of some stock but my nearest store is 25mins from here by car and I won't have access to a car until later in the week.

My poor sausagemeat can't go unwrapped for that long 😬

Giant sausage roll.

I make my own short crust for mince pies and quiche.

Patapouf · 09/12/2019 18:50

@babbi I'm jealous of your bargain outs please share y
Please share your mince pie filling recipes with me 🥺 I saw some sort of mince pie pastry roulade online and I'm tempted to give it a go.

@KittenVsXmastree is shortcrust easier?

I haven't attempted to make either from scratch in over a decade and I can't even remember how.

Apologies for weird typos, the app doesn't seem to functioning brilliantly for me.

Lots of vegetarian main dishes for Christmas involve puff pastry, eg Mushroom Wellington.

happypotamus · 09/12/2019 18:52

Today I used it to make tomato tarts. DH turned vegan and these tomato tarts are one of the few vegan meals my DC happily eat. I didn't get it from Ocado though.

Bellasblankexpression · 09/12/2019 18:53

Sausage rolls
Mince pies
Cheese and chutney and cheese and spinach pinwheels

homemadecommunistrussia · 09/12/2019 18:53

Sausage rolls on boxing day, I use shortcrust for everything else.

joffreyscoffees · 09/12/2019 18:54

Pin wheels and also a pizza-type tart, also I did a really nice carrot, kale and mascarpone tart that I need to try again.

It's a staple in this house.

KittenVsXmastree · 09/12/2019 18:57

@Patapouf, YES, shortcrust is miles easier.
Rub fat into flour, add some liquid (egg and milk if want it rich, water for standard stuff), and bind into a ball. Leave in fridge for abit then roll and use.

Puff scares me. It's all layers of butter and turning and rolling and leaving and turning and rolling and leaving. Usually resulting in butter all over the kitchin and foot stamping from me!

willowmelangell · 09/12/2019 19:03

Savoury pie topper. Large shallow rectangle dish. Chicken pieces, halved mushrooms, squash pieces, peas, corn, ham or bacon, thyme. 2 table spoons of milk/cream/stock. Cover the dish with pastry. Trim overflow. Press pastry down to inside dish. Poke a steam hole. Brush with milk. Middle of medium hot oven for 40ish mins. Serve with mash and green veg.
The only green veg that works well IN a pie is peas. Anything else, broccoli, spinach, beans etc just goes pale and urgh. I speak from experience.

hauntedvagina · 09/12/2019 19:05

Cut into four, scatter with grated cheese, bake and eat with gravy. Bloody amazing.

FeltCarrot · 09/12/2019 19:08

I made sausage rolls on Saturday with spring onions, soy, sesame oil and chilli flakes! Mmmmm

Patapouf · 09/12/2019 19:08

@KittenVsXmastree oh goodness it's even more imperative I get my hands on the pre-made stuff then!

So many delicious sounding ideas here, thanks everyone. I'm definitely going to try cheese and chutney pinwheels!!
