Scarecrows. Does anybody still use them ?

I haven't seen one for years, apart from the flashing spinning globes with big yellow eyes. Apparently they're meant to be quite effective. I don't know if traditional scarecrows were any good.

Farmers around here do, a couple of them also use fake birds of prey on a long string so it looks like it's flying around in the wind. There is even an annual scarecrow festival not too far from here.

Cool. I thought they were extinct but obviously not. There's something very quaint and British about scarecrows, even though they're probably all over the world.

@Venger Wonder if you live near me? Quite a few scarecrow festivals round here.

Venger · 09/12/2019 09:12

I'm in Northumberland @magimedi

Couple of scarecrow festivals near me too and you sometimes see them in fields (Westcountry), the kid always loved trying to spot them all on the way to school.

@Venger I'm in Sussex - pretty far apart!

I'm in West Yorkshire. There's a scarecrow festival in Kettlewell every August and I think Wetwang does one too. But I haven't seen a traditional scarecrow in a farmer's field for many years. Maybe smallholders and allotment owners use them.
