Can I ask for my money back?

Think this is a bit awkward and I'm not sure about the logistics of how it might effect someone who is self-employed, so here goes!

I've been using a cleaner since February, she runs a small business and employs a few other people. The arrangement was she'd come every two weeks and I pay her upfront on the last working day of the month (so always pay her before the cleaning takes place)

On August 30th I paid £170 for our two usual cleans and between one thing and another, she hasn't been able to come. I've had to cancel twice because of sickness or work emergencies, but always let her know 24 hours in advance.
She's cancelled on me four times, usually an hour or two after the time she was supposed to arrive. I didn't mind too much, she had family sickness problems and it was unavoidable for her.

Anyway, after the last re-arrangement she said she'd get back to me with the next dates she could do ASAP and it never happened.

My ask is, can I ask for the money back and just say we'll re-start the schedule back up in mid-January time when she has room in her diary?
It's rather a lot of money to have 'banked' just before Christmas and in all honesty, it'd come in very handy! Not sure if this is the done thing though? Will it hurt the financial side of her business because that's the last thing I would want!

Ah, sorry I missed that. What a shame ☹️

I've got to admit though, everything about the way this woman handles payment tells me she has form for this sort of behaviour & has peed customers off before. You've just been very patient, so it's taken a while for that to click with you, nobody demands full payment up front, not even builders or a seamstress where there's costs to cover before starting the job.

I hope you get your money back, but I'd be going for the full amount via small claims

Still no bloody money. I've sent a message asking for it to be sent within the hour. I am furious now, feel like a bloody mug. Never again! Angry

@HereForTheHelp I'm angry on your behalf!! Angry
You have been more than patient. Don't be too hard on yourself, she's the person in the wrong here!

@HereForTheHelp I got this info on the trading standards website. Contact the consumer helpline for further advice tomorrow if you can.

If you need advice or wish to report problems with goods or services, bought from a trader based in the UK, the appropriate advice agency is the Citizens Advice Consumer Service which can be contacted on 03454 04 05 066. If you are a consumer based in Scotland this service is provided by the Scottish Government funded Advice Direct Scotlandd, a telephone and online consumer advice service, on 0808 164 60000*.

If it doesn't arrive within the hour, cease all contact. Proceed with a small claims application. Don't bother contacting her again, it doesn't make her do what you want and it increases your blood pressure.

Make sure you've got all the facts. Then start your claim.

Stop being nice. You can’t «nice» her into giving you your money back. Tell her you will be filing a claim tomorrow.

Oh my god, genuinely shocked. I've got money! I'm pretty sure it's about £20 less than it should be but I honestly can't be arsed arguing. I'm taking it as a lesson learned and never ever going through anything like that again!

Finally! What a cheek shirt changing you!!

I would still report her /her business to trading standards, with the hope that she doesn't do this to anybody else again (that's if trading standards act).

Don't let it put you off getting another cleaner - but find one through personal recommendations and don't pay them until the job is done.

I'm just pleased it's sorted now - and I agree you probably won't get the missing £20 back and not sure it's worth the stress chasing for it.

*what a cheek short changing you

did she send it as a refund or a payment - if the latter she may claim it back.
