Is Call The Midwife good?

It's on BBC Iplayer as a box set and I'm looking for something new(to me) to watch but is it all just babies being born(which doesn't interest me all that much) or do they have storylines that focus on other issues?

I'm a huge fan of it...on a rainy Sunday afternoon with a coffee...bliss

WarmSausageTea · 06/12/2019 12:28

So good; not as cosy as you might expect, and not always an easy watch, but top quality drama and writing, I think.

AfterSomeAdvice1234 · 06/12/2019 12:30

Oh it's wonderful - love the music! A bit twee but nothing wrong with that. Also the final sequence is so so beautiful - well worth the hours of binging to get there...

My DD was absolutely astounded when I pointed out that the most recent series is set several years after I was born.

Looking forward to the Christmas episode.

Honeybee85 · 06/12/2019 12:33

Really lovely feel good series. I love the nostalgic setting! Highly recommended!

PopcornAndWine · 06/12/2019 12:40

Working my way through it on Netflix at the minute, love it!

Pascha · 06/12/2019 12:48

I've loved the first 3 or 4 series, the emotional impact of the earlier storylines was very interesting but the last couple of series have felt very Heartbeat/soapy/celebrate the sixties. A token birth, some tedious story surrounding the outside lives of the nurses, a small amount of nunning but it's I don't like it much now, it's boring.

GingleJangleScarecrow · 06/12/2019 13:00

"nunning" my new favourite word Grin

Does Def Leppard's drummer swim in circles?

Anyone who hasn't watched it before will find out in the first episode Grin

Rockbird · 06/12/2019 16:43

I don't think you can call spoiler for an storyline that aired in 2013!

reluctantbrit · 06/12/2019 18:20

I loved it until season 4 when it became quite ridiculous and lots of the storylines involving the midwives became unbelievable.

The first three, absolutely brilliant.

amusedbush · 06/12/2019 20:05

@Rockbird

I’m still trying to avoid spoilers for the West Wing Grin

ForalltheSaints · 06/12/2019 21:22

I think the first two or three series were good, but latterly as it has moved into the 60s it has lost something.

Rockbird · 07/12/2019 11:06

@amusedbush Xmas Grin

Incidentally, every episode is currently on iPlayer if you're trying to catch up. I used to be a mega fan but have cooled off the last couple of years though. Might start them again from scratch though.

RandomMess · 07/12/2019 11:13

The first few series are based on the autobiographical books, brilliant. Thereafter it became formulaic twee drivel that is PC and I cannot stand it.

amusedbush · 07/12/2019 11:47

@Rockbird

Ahhh thank you! I’ve only seen the first season and it hasn’t been on any streaming service so I gave up. This will be my Christmas break viewing!

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 09/12/2019 20:57

@amusedbush Enjoy...the West Wing is my fave...bet you couldnt tell that from my user name Grin

TheStaleBiscuitofDoom · 13/12/2019 19:32

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who responded. I've been watching it and I'm currently on Episode 4 of Season 2 and I'm loving it.

Ah but she's not called Shelagh in the first episode(s) Wink

Reallybadidea · 13/12/2019 20:52

The first few series that were based on the book were very good. Once the storylines were made up from the producer's head it started to get a bit shit. The saccharine background music is particularly annoying.

Rockbird · 13/12/2019 20:58

All of the stories used in later episodes are all stories that have come in from other people. More or less factual with a bit of drama added but not just plucked from thin air.
