I tried making hot chocolate last year by melting chocolate and milk together but it went all grainy Sad

What did I do wrong???

Not for the purists but I love chocolate ovaltine made with hot milk. Nice texture and the maltiness is really nice (plus it has loads of vitamins so it must be good for you)

Tip for those using real chocolate - microwave the chocolate for 30s first so it melts more easily and you shouldn’t get the graininess.

sockittome123 if the chocolate goes grainy it means its seized, supposedly that happens if it comes into contact with water when you're heating it (I always thought it was if you heated it too quick but just googled and supposedly its water).

My favourite way to make hot chocolate is melt a dairy milk into full fat milk - whipped cream and marshmallows on top. Amazing. Will try adding double cream next time I make it, for extra creaminess. I had a great hot chocolate at Edinburgh zoo where they put the marshmallows underneath the cream so that they melted and it was lovely.

Wispa hot chocolate

My favourite is Swiss Miss, it’s American but you can buy it on amazon or eBay. The dark one is the best

if your chocolate has gone grainy you have got it too hot too fast....also microwaving normal cheaper chocolate is difficult as it is very easily burned with the extra sugar and filth they put in it

give the milk a little heat first then put in the chocolate..if you break or chop it small it'll melt faster but once the chocolate is in the milk keep it moving

the chocolate and water thing is pretty much a myth... I make THIS AMAZING MOUSSE with only chocolate and water and it never seizes.
I will say thought that their five minute claim is very ambitious...and if you do make it remember you are whisking to keep it moving to chill not to make it thick as you would for whisking cream.
