What wanky things do you actually quite like?

I often see threads about popular things people don't like, and since it sometimes seems a bit trendy to NOT like popular things I wondered what slightly wanky things you DO like?

This thought popped into my head whilst eating duck pate on one of the three "artisan breads" I picked up from the bakery this morning. My DH always takes the piss out of my love for a posh bread but I care not a jot Grin

Someone mentioned Novels upthread. Why are novels wanky?

Egghead68 · 05/12/2019 19:32

I think that was me. I suppose it could be quite pretentious to go on about high-brow novels you have read.

Cloudy Bay is lovely, Jules is harder to get over here, but was my favourite everyday tipple over there, it's a really good Marlborough Sav Blanc. I have found an online supplier. . .

And bought two cases.

(Husband, 'I just don't know where the money goes. . .' Wife, 'well I don't know, I'm sure dear. . .')

We're a cook from scratch family. Once you get into the habit and the taste, it's hard to go back. It just seems wrong somehow, kind of like cheating.

Possibly my worst bit of wankery is New Lynn - steak and lamb shanks. . .

cukooboo · 05/12/2019 19:35

I'm going to order it!

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 05/12/2019 19:36

Craft beer, wine direct from vineyard, cask strength whisky
Posh scented candles (L’artisan Parfumeur)
Niche scents (see above)
Farm shop produce
French chanson
Foreign and silent movies

I recently reorganised my walk-in pantry and found that I have 17 different types of salt, all with quite specific uses.

WombleishMerryChristmasOfThigh · 05/12/2019 19:37

I've been drinking loose tea from a china teapot for a couple of years now. I've asked for another, glass teapot for Christmas, so I can also go bag-free for Earl Grey now, too, with no cross-contamination of flavour.

mbosnz · 05/12/2019 19:39

I'm going to order it!

Do it! (I hope you like it!) I'm a bit of an obsessive when it comes to Marlborough Sav Blanc - to the point that I didn't just name the type of wine, but the actual wine and vintage at a pub quiz.

MsRinky, I so envy you the walk in pantry - the ultimate in wankery! You can afford the space for 17 different types of salt then. . .

Ooh, we also love the ballet and it's the only form of dancing I can bear to watch Xmas Blush

Going to see the Bolshoi Nutcracker the weekend after this; although it'll be beamed to the cinema, as we're in the NE. We've seen the Royal Ballet version a couple of times.

WombleishMerryChristmasOfThigh · 05/12/2019 19:41

Does only buying cordials and pop in glass bottles wanky?

meow1989 · 05/12/2019 19:42

I love a white wine spritzer or prosecco with lavender syrup.

Upgrading to the executive club in 5* hotels

My toddler being snuggled for bed in clean john lewis pyjamas

Tapenade, foccaccia, avo toast, chai latte

Opera or ballet at christmas

I'm.sure theres more!

olderandwisernot · 05/12/2019 19:42

This has been the best thread for a long time - who knew how many wankers were out there!! I feel inspired to try a little wankery of my own now....

Bluesheep8 · 05/12/2019 19:43

egghead ah, when you put it like that I completely understand!

meow1989 · 05/12/2019 19:43

Oh we also have "grown up living room" that dc barely goes in, but that's mostly because it's on the first floor

Bluesheep8 · 05/12/2019 19:47

L'Occitane almond shower oil

Bluesheep8 · 05/12/2019 19:47

Oh and Espa lip balm

PrettyShiningPeople · 05/12/2019 19:47

I love a Sauvignon, it’s my favourite too. I actually have a bottle of Cloudy Bay awaiting a suitable occasion Grin

WombleishMerryChristmasOfThigh · 05/12/2019 19:49

We also listen to Classic FM when we're together in the car. I suppose Radio 3 would be more wanky, but I prefer to listen short movements, not whole opuses when we're not going to be in the car long.

Me too. It could be tonight - having found fellow Sav Blanc afficiandos! Wine

nofriendsatll · 05/12/2019 19:53

Have you tried Greywacke. From the man originally behind Cloudy Bay

NaturalBornWoman · 05/12/2019 19:54

I have an Aga and a very beautiful wanky summerhouse and I use a wanky aeropress to make my coffee at work instead of using the vending machine or making instant like everyone else.

Cmagic7 · 05/12/2019 19:58

Craft beer
Ottolenghi recipes with ingredients no-one's ever heard of
Long jazz solos
White tablecloths
Indie films where nothing ever happens

mbosnz · 05/12/2019 19:59

Greywacke is lovely. If you guys ever go to NZ, you have to go on a winery wander in the South Island, especially Marlborough. There's so many great wineries, and often they have fabulous restaurants attached to them.

An Aga, NaturalBornWoman? Now that is wanky! Gas, coal, or electric? I got brought up with a coal fired aga that Mum and the cat got up at 3am to put more coal on, and it was the best thing ever to cook on.

I had what most people would consider to be a wanky conversation in the gym today. I was on the rowing machine and a gym friend behind me was on the bike so admittedly we were semi-shouting to each other. I was lamenting how sad I am that now I'm not working, I may never get to fly Business or First class again. We then discussed Qater's Q Suites and how we find it really hard in their Business class as you have to choose when you eat and what you want you to eat (rather than a fixed meal at a set time). First world wanker problems I know. Sometimes it's fun to be a wanker.

I also like going to the hidden cake shop in the depths of east London that only hipsters and cake obsessives know about. They make cakes for Fortnum and Harrods but if you know where their bakery is you can buy direct (at obviously much lower prices). It's hidden in the depths of a graffiti covered industrial estate that isn't very accessible so not somewhere you come across by accident. There was a fashion shoot happening outside last time I went. Everyone I've ever seen there is incredibly cool. And the cakes are TO DIE FOR. It's all very pretentious London wanky yet the people are very down to earth (in the coolest possible way) and I love it!

Finally, I like to sprinkle salt crystals on my toasted cheese sandwich (made with sourdough from the local hipster bakery). Try it! So delicious!! The salt crystals just add something lovely. I wish I was original but I'm copying the idea from my favorite independent coffee shop in Melbourne (who, yet again, are hidden away in an industrial building). Pretty sure I was made to like wanky things.....or I've been living in east London for far too long.
