Smelly flatulence whilst asleep :/

GlowingR · 04/12/2019 21:10

I've generally had mild IBS and general bloatedness (I've tried cutting out the main culprits to minimize this but if I wanted to eliminate everything I am sensitive to, I would have a scarily limited diet of almost nothing).

My partner mentioned that despite me never farting in front of him in the day, I usually let one off (a silent, very odorous one) during the middle of the night. He said it's always silent, always during the middle of the night, and even though the odour is strong (enough to wake him up), it disappears fairly quickly too. I felt so embarassed hearing that :(

I don't eat very late at night most days (occasionally it's unavoidable to eat late), I can't cut out more things than what I am already as it would make it impractical to eat out (I'm already saying no for many food items e.g. milk, beans, brocolli, wheat, fructose containing fruits, artificial flavourings, never have fizzy drinks, etc. and anyway, he says it's basically every night and I eat different things every day.

My questions are:

  1. Any tried and tested fixes please?
  2. Has any other female's partner told them something like this?

Don't feel badly, op. This certainly isn't your fault. My husband does this on occasion, as well. He has ulcerative colitis, and if he has a flare up this will happen. It's never bothered me.

There are knickers with charcoal linings in them that you could try. Have you been to the doctor for any treatment?

Blaziken · 04/12/2019 21:22

Is it definitely you doing this? How can he be sure?

Beanybop · 04/12/2019 21:25

I think it’s pretty mean of him to tell you, it’s not like you’re doing it on purpose.

Why did he tell you? If he was having a bit of a giggle about it with you fair enough, but otherwise what can you really do about it? I'm sure he let's one rip whilst asleep too!! You're watching your diet so not much more you can do. Id tell him to get over it

egontoste · 04/12/2019 21:43

Better out than in Grin

And if it wakes him up........ how does he know it was you?

Gardai · 04/12/2019 21:51

How do you know he is telling the truth ? The smell wakes him up so he says...I smell bullshit (sorry op no pun intended).
Have a look at ‘DP’ and not your diet.

AnyFucker · 04/12/2019 21:52

Knickers with charcoal lining ?

I live and learn...

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/12/2019 21:55

Tell him to fuck off and start guffing in his face in the day! I assume he never farts - or his smell of roses? Is he horrible about other things too

Hirsutefirs · 04/12/2019 21:58

Better an empty house than a bad tenant.

And he’s no gentlemen.

amusedbush · 04/12/2019 22:01

I once did such a smelly fart in my sleep that it woke me up Blush DH then woke up and complained about the smell, so I told him it was him and he apologised Grin

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 04/12/2019 22:23

That's really shitty of him to tell you and he has no way of knowing it's you if it's silent and he's asleep. I have ibs and could power my own wind farm. Everyone farts in their sleep. Was there any need to embarrass you and make you feel uncomfortable? No.

Icanflyhigh · 04/12/2019 22:26

DP and I have competitions with farts!

It is a natural bodily occurrence. Your H needs to get over himself.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 04/12/2019 22:30

@amusedbush I once woke up to a terrible stench, blamed dh, I turned over in disgust at his vile habits and let off another. I then laughed so hard I woke him up

..it was a christmas time one too...all those green veg and the turkey!

OP your dh is no gentleman ...as a PP said. What does he expect you to do about it?

emwithme · 04/12/2019 22:50

My DH lets off the loudest smelliest fart just as he's waking up. Apparently, I let out a silent but deadly one as I'm falling asleep.

Genetics is a bitch. Our 1 year old DD does both, and has done since birth pretty much.

morriseysquif · 04/12/2019 22:52

You can buy fart absorbing bed covers somewhere.....

morriseysquif · 04/12/2019 22:57

Or these

charcoal tablets for farts

morriseysquif · 04/12/2019 22:59

here you go

headlock · 04/12/2019 23:43

I agree, not kind of him to tell you. I stink way worse that my husband but he doesn't make me feel embarrassed about it. I also have IBS and can't help it.
I sometimes can hardly believe that smell comes from me 😕

sillysmiles · 04/12/2019 23:53

Why are you embarrassed? That is irrational. You aren't doing it on purpose and have no control of it and it's a pretty normal/natural body function.

amusedbush · 05/12/2019 09:29

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow

I'd just started Slimming World when I did that particular fart. All that fruit and veg is lethal!

Deathraystare · 05/12/2019 10:15

Everyone farts at night! It is just you are not conscious of doing so, so cannot clench your buttocks together!!! Even his saintly self probably does too!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 05/12/2019 10:20

Do you intentionally not fart in front of him in the day?

Does he fart in front of you?

It's once a night. He can get over it I'm sure.

Alwayscheerful · 05/12/2019 10:25

@amusedbush Grintears are streaming down my face. I very much doubt I would get away with that. Hilarious.

Gatehouse77 · 05/12/2019 10:25

In our house farting is accepted as a natural bodily function. We try to out do each other on occasion 😜 as it’s nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about within the family.
Conversely, I would do my best to avoid doing it in front of anyone else (except my siblings).

billy1966 · 05/12/2019 12:21

You poor thing OP, that sounds very tough to be so restricted.

He's certainly not a gentleman to have told you!🙄
