Are you hungry at bedtime?

I’m always starving in the evenings by 9 or 10pm. Then I have to decide whether to eat (usually hot buttered toast) or go to bed hungry. I don’t think eating late is ideal for my health and weight.

Do you deny the urge and if not, what do you eat?

I am. What I do is either
Eat a bit less for dinner, to leave justified toast room
Have just one slice of toast, but with peanut butter on, so it’s a bit more filling

I'm exactly the same and trying very hard to just not eat anything and have a herbal tea instead. Or I'll have grapes, if I really want something else I have Greek yoghurt with honey and toasted almonds which is lovely and I can convince myself it's a treat.

Everytimeref · 04/12/2019 21:06

I have cereal. Have done since I was a child. Can't sleep if I am hungry.

RoomR0613 · 04/12/2019 21:08

I have to have some Greek yoghurt about 30 mins after my main meal and drink a pint of water.

Usually don't feel hungry before bed if I remember to do that.

afterme · 04/12/2019 21:37

I might go for a bowl of cereal tonight to take the edge off.

What sort of food do you have at dinner and roughly what time do you eat?

Could you make some changes to the meals (adding leafy greens or beans/pulses/nuts - anything low GI to improve fullness) or eat a bit later on so it's not so long until 9-10pm?

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 04/12/2019 21:48

I've literally just had 2 apple and blackberry pies!

dementedpixie · 04/12/2019 21:50

Have dinner later. If I eat too early I get the munchies later

LobsterQuadrille2 · 04/12/2019 21:56

Always have breadsticks and/or yogurt at around 9.30pm.

Magpie1976 · 04/12/2019 21:59

For years now I have a bowl of cereal and fruit at about 9pm every night

NoHummus · 04/12/2019 21:59

I'm often hungry at bedtime. I usually have a slice of toast. Couldn't sleep the other night so got up and made toast at 2am.

Ginfordinner · 04/12/2019 22:04

No. I eat my evening meal between 6.30 and 7.30 and and am still full at bedtime.

Grobagsforever · 04/12/2019 22:10

I'm generally full til bedtime if I eat a substantial meal any time from 2pm.

afterme · 04/12/2019 22:11

I do eat early as the dc like to eat about 5pm as they are hungry after school. I am a single parent and wouldn’t bother cooking for myself later. Also by the time they go to bed (9ish) it would be too late for me to eat a whole meal.

FatAndFurious7 · 04/12/2019 22:16

Could you offer them a snack when they get home from school to tide them over until a bit later and eat dinner all together around 7pm ish instead?

HalyardHitch · 04/12/2019 22:18

I used to always be really hungry by 9pm but I've been fasting on and off for the past six weeks and now 9/10 am genuinely not hungry. My appetite has also reduced

Hillocrew · 04/12/2019 22:21

If I have a later dinner I'm fine. But an earlier dinner sees me going for toast or a sandwich before bed otherwise I'd be lying in bed starving and not able to sleep!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 04/12/2019 22:22

Keep boiled eggs in the fridge, low in calories but filling, one is enough for me to take the edge off.

ishouldhavestucktocats · 04/12/2019 22:25

A nice mug of Horlicks. That's the answer...

Icypop · 04/12/2019 22:30

Bread/toast is my downfall. If im hungry later on I have a pint of water & if im still hungry after that i have a ricecake with peanut butter or philly.

hennybeans · 04/12/2019 22:55

I was always told growing up that when you're hungry at night it's your body saying that it has run out of energy and so you need to go to sleep. I think if you choose to eat, you're then fuelling your body for a few more hours of activity.

Hillocrew · 04/12/2019 22:57

I get that I do. But how come I can't sleep properly then?

ElloBrian · 04/12/2019 23:06

Without knowing your whole day’s eating pattern then it’s hard to say!
I do think if you’re eating early with the kids it is different to eating later at 8 or 9. If you’re hungry after a late dinner then you need to reconsider what you’re eating and portion size etc. But if you’re eating early then of course you may want a small second course later on ...
