Is this too cheap?

Going on holiday next summer, I always book hotel and flights separately and usually book direct with the hotel.

Booking direct with the hotel will be £1700, but I've seen that Loveholidays have got the same dates and room type for £1100.
Obviously it's a huge price difference and I'm tempted to book the cheaper deal but I'm worried that it might be too good to be true. I've read a few horror stories about people turning up to hotels via Loveholidays and they don't have a booking. I've also read loads of positive things about them as well.

Do I play it safe and book direct or take a chance and potentially save £600?

The hotel are ex Thomas cook and joining the tui group next season if that makes any difference.

As long as the holiday is ATOL protected I’d book through Loveholidays. I’d use a credit card to give myself extra protection.

I don't think it will be ATOL because I'm booking the flights separately. I think you only get ATOL with package holidays.

We’ve used Love Holidays for our last three summer holidays and have never had a problem with them. I generally email the hotel direct a few weeks before we go and just confirm that they’re expecting us.
