It just means a normal shirt as opposed to a polo shirt, which has a few buttons on a placket. Americans use this term.
I don’t know why. shrugs.

I don't think they're American, just seen an advert for one and ha e been spotting it more frequently recently.

Yep in the uk it's the shirts with little buttons on the edge of the collar to keep a tie neatly down- at least that's what it's been referred to in the industry I've worked in for donkeys years .

I’m fairly certain that—yes—it’s because of the collar having buttons, but I’ve never met anyone who works from the bottom up, regardless of collar type.

I’m sure some do, just haven’t seen them. Much easier to start at the top.
