And in what way is it different from those that button up?

It’s cos America is in a different hemisphere so here we button up but there they button down
It’s a bit like the water in the plug hole going down a different way in Australia

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 16:58

It’s one where the collar has little buttons at the tips.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 04/12/2019 16:58

I thought the same as Bert...

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 16:59

Oh, sorry, no it isn’t. It’s what hoppinggreen said.

Marmite27 · 04/12/2019 16:59

What Bertrand said

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 04/12/2019 16:59

I wanna go to hopping's America! It's moved!

Greenteandchives · 04/12/2019 16:59

It just means a normal shirt as opposed to a polo shirt, which has a few buttons on a placket. Americans use this term.
I don’t know why. shrugs.

StealthPolarBear · 04/12/2019 16:59

I don't think they're American, just seen an advert for one and ha e been spotting it more frequently recently.

I've often wondered this. And sports coat which I always assumed was like a baseball jacket, is more like a blazer-y thing?

TheQueef · 04/12/2019 17:39

Always thought button down collar but I likeGreens answer better, makes sense really.

AngusThermopyle · 04/12/2019 17:39

Yep in the uk it's the shirts with little buttons on the edge of the collar to keep a tie neatly down- at least that's what it's been referred to in the industry I've worked in for donkeys years . Smile

Velveteenfruitbowl · 04/12/2019 17:41

I though everyone buttoned downwards though?

ShagMeRiggins · 04/12/2019 17:51

It’s cos America is in a different hemisphere so here we button up but there they button down

Eh? Where do you live?

I’m fairly certain that—yes—it’s because of the collar having buttons, but I’ve never met anyone who works from the bottom up, regardless of collar type.

I’m sure some do, just haven’t seen them. Much easier to start at the top.
