Nintendo Switch help! Do you know how pricing works??

So the small one has "helpfully" finally decided he wants a Nintendo switch for Xmas, just after Black Friday. (facepalm)

I'm aware black Friday deals are a bit suspect....they're not always the deal that it seems, but I'm looking at prices and they are way more than I thought. But I'm suspicious of the pricing system anyway...I know prices fluctuate, especially at this time of the year.

My questions are.....
Is it likely prices are going to go down in time for xmas?
How much did you pay for yours?
Where is the best place to get them?

I can just about afford it at the price it's coming out at, but it means he won't get much else...if I can get it cheaper it would be bloody helpful!

(I know I could say no, but he's had such a shit year he deserves it really!)

Also are ShopTo reliable/safe?? They are the cheapest I've found so far??

Bought one for DS1 during 'Black Friday'. It wasn't noticeably cheaper than previously, and I wouldn't expect it to get cheaper in the run up to Christmas. I think I read somewhere that Nintendo doesn't do much in the way of discounting. Others may know better though.

I found this a helpful website (I had exactly the same questions - but about 2 weeks ago!): www.techradar.com/uk/cyber-monday/nintendo-switch-cyber-monday-deals-2019-bundles-live

Yeah that's kinda confirmed my thoughts Sisyphus.

I generally think Black Friday is a bit of a rip off, but I wanted to double check in case there's someone on here who knows how this pricing shit works....i'm a cynical shit and that might be my undoing this time...i need to make sure DS has his main pressie sorted but I don't want to spend a fortune!

The price of the Switch has been stubbornly more-or-less constant since it launched, because the thing is selling loads. So don't expect big discounts. More likely is a bundle that includes a game essentially for free or cheap, so keep an eye out. Helps if you have an idea what game he wants.

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 04/12/2019 13:05

Ooh thtas helpful BeBeside thank you.

Cheapest still £300 though

Nah I know it's gonna be expensive... But cheaper is better!

safari yeah that's what I was afraid of!

He'd prefer Luigis Mansion I think but Mario Kart might have to do....I can always get relatives to buy him different games I guess?

Just signed up to post this to you. Sorry to hear your little one has had a bad year. Hopefully this may help. The link contains all the info you need but basically its a Switch plus Mario Kart for just under £252 or 2 games for just under £300 using a 10% discount code on the Nintendo website. If the copied link doesn't work just do a search on the HotUKDeals website... www.hotukdeals.com/deals/nintendo-switch-neon-blueneon-red-mario-kart-8-deluxe-bundle-25199-with-gamesradar-guide-10-off-code-3354632#thread-comments

And dont worry about seeing it massively reduced in the New Year. It wont be. They really hold the prices and a bundle is the way to go.

KenAdams · 04/12/2019 23:41

Copy the Amazon link and paste it into CamelCamelCamel. It will show you the price fluctuations.

Dazedandconfused10 · 04/12/2019 23:45

Nintendo tax = paying £30 for a game that came out 8 years ago to play on switch...so prices are fairly static for consoles.

Dazedandconfused10 · 04/12/2019 23:49

Infact I just paid 20 quid for a game originally released in 1993...

56Marshmallow · 05/12/2019 00:51

I paid £279 a few months back. Came with a game plus £30 towards other games.
Some mobile phone deals are giving away switches at the mo.

SpoonBlender · 05/12/2019 02:40

ShopTo are safe, I use them fairly regularly and never had a problem. You can get the Mario Kart bundle for the same £280 from Argos if you prefer - www.argos.co.uk/product/4076511

That HotUKDeals 10% off will work, but it's a bit of a faff - you have to order a catalogue, register it, then use the code on the inside cover to get your discount.

That's all for the 'full fat' Switch. There's also the Switch Lite - £200 but no combo deal, you can't plug it into the TV, which may be a positive or a negative! They're both cheaper and sturdier, more kid-proof because the controllers don't unclip, it's just one piece.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nintendo-Switch-Lite-Console-Turquoise-Switch-BRAND-NEW-AND-SEALED-/401962925085 has a "Pay only £171.96" if you enter PARTYTIME at checkout.

Pinkbonbon · 05/12/2019 03:02

Nah Nintendo aren't big on sales.

Switch lite is about 70 quid cheaper (same thing only doesn't play on tv). If I was buying for a kid then no way would I buy the full model.

Always been a Nintendo girl me but have to say my Xbox gets 10x the use my switch does now. If you think you might use it (eg: for Netflix) then maybe think about one of those instead. Better value for money. The games too.

Pinkbonbon · 05/12/2019 03:04

Or consider a 2ds if he doesn't already have one. There are way more games for that.

Baldybutt · 05/12/2019 05:46

Not too much of a problem getting the 10% code, just got to order a catalogue and use the code on the booklet on the Nintendo site when it arrives. Issue is whether they have the console still in stock! Next cheapest way is eBay though as you suggest.

gemma19846 · 05/12/2019 14:41

Yes shopto are legit. Maybe order through a cashback app too so you at least get something extra (although it can take a while to claim back the credit)

TitchyP · 05/12/2019 23:29

'Very' sometimes have deals, cash-back for new customers and so on. I got a new Switch (no games though) for about £210 this way a few months ago.
