$50?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 03/12/2019 22:14

I just watched that. The only one I got close to was the coil because an American friend told me last year.

It's totally iniquitous.

InterstellarDrifter · 03/12/2019 22:14

$300?
I know an epidemic is $900 so many people can’t afford them AngrySad

TheNameGames · 03/12/2019 22:14

Insurance on your house, but only if your house is worth more than 300,000?

BeeFarseer · 03/12/2019 22:14

$300? It'll be something ridiculous.

InterstellarDrifter · 03/12/2019 22:14

Epidemic meaning epipen

custardbear · 03/12/2019 22:19

Epipens have quite a short use by date too

Barsh · 03/12/2019 22:20

The childbirth costs were astounding as was the coil costs. And an ambulance....Christ

Most people don’t pay that. That’s what insurance is for.

Of course , appreciate a lot of folks don’t have insurance which is a problem .

PristineCondition · 03/12/2019 22:27

Most people don’t pay that. That’s what insurance is for

No very lucky people with money or good jobs have it.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 03/12/2019 22:27

But how much is insurance? I've heard several people say $400 a month for a single policy. Much more for a family.

QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2019 22:30

Strawberry or if they get too ill their insurers can just drop them out. Or if they lose their job the person and family stops being insured, even if one person is on expensive treatment. Then they cant find another insurer who will insure them. appreciate a lot of folks don't have insurance, really. It's a lot more complicated than just 'poor folks'.

Medical bills are the biggest cause of bankruptcy in the US, depending on the source, between 600,000 and 1 million families a year go bankrupt as direct result of med bills. How many have filed for bankruptcy in the UK because of medical bills? Zero. None.

strawberrypopsicles · 03/12/2019 22:32

In 2016, 91.2% of Americans had health insurance. That constitutes the majority, don’t you think?

I’m not saying that the system is perfect. It’s not at all. I’m just saying that more time people don’t pay for an ambulance for example directly.

ByAppointmentTo · 03/12/2019 22:33

@StarbucksSmarterSister Our insurance for a family of four was $2100 a month.

RhymingRabbit3 · 03/12/2019 22:35

So how much is an inhaler then?

QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2019 22:36

And insurance is what, free? Hmm is all insurance cover you for everything? Don't think so...

ivykaty44 · 03/12/2019 22:40

So how much is salbutamol? In the US and in the UK how much is the cost to the NHS?

MagnificentDelurker · 03/12/2019 22:40

Strawberry

Is the figure of 90% insured due to obamacare? Being uninsured was not uncommon when I lived there 12 years ago. Some estimated 40 m uninsured.

Anyway Obama care was far from comprehensive cover and Trump has made it even worse.

KenDodd · 03/12/2019 22:44

Even 10% uninsured is 33 million people though.

MagnificentDelurker · 03/12/2019 22:48

Good point. Didn’t do the mental arithmetic

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 03/12/2019 22:49

Yes people have insurance but getting them to pay out isn't always easy apparently. Lots of things aren't covered too. Is it $400?

mindutopia · 03/12/2019 22:51

With insurance, which was anywhere from $300 to $800 a month (just for me), I think my Seretide used to cost me around $50 per month because it wasn’t generic. Without insurance, I don’t remember but I couldn’t afford them monthly so had to ration them and not take the preventative inhaler every day. I moved to work in a developing country and they were only $20 and I remember it was amazing to be able to afford them again.

thehorseandhisboy · 03/12/2019 22:52

"..appreciate a lot of folks don’t have insurance which is a problem.."

Christ. That must be the understatement of the year.

mindutopia · 03/12/2019 22:52

*I should add the above is based on pre-2011 prices, which is when I left and moved to the UK. Who knows what they are now.

PigletJohn · 03/12/2019 22:53

what do things cost?

you can actually see jaws drop.
