DD9 broke her collar bone and I sent her to school on a spoon of Calpol!

DD (9) fell out of bed last night at midnight (fast asleep, not messing about). She complained of a painful shoulder and was pretty upset. She could move both arms but one was obviously painful. She can be a bit of a drama llama so I made all the right noises, gave her some Calpol and she settled after a while. It was agony this morning and I had to help her dress. I said we would go to the local walk in straight away, but she had an event at school this morning she didn't want to miss and said she wanted to go in. If it was still painful she would tell a teacher. I got the call at lunchtime to say she was very upset. I took her to the walk in - broken collar bone. I feel like the shittest mum in the world.

Please make me feel better and tell me about times when you've not believed your children were ill/injured and packed them off to school with a dose of Calpol and the time honoured phrase "The teacher will call me if I need to come and get you" ringing in their ears... 😳

I fell off a swing and broke my collar bone the day before the big residential trip in Year 6. I remember the agony! She must be very good at masking her pain for you to send her in with calpol I must say

3 days here with DD with broken arm. Feel bad about it still and it was 5 years ago. You really wouldn’t have known until she tried to reach up for something and couldn’t.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/12/2019 17:36

We are not entirely sure how my DD broke her arm when she was 4. She fell out of bed one night. Then the next day fell out a tree. Nurse at hospital said it was likely to be a combination.

She cried for a 2-3 minutes after falling out the tree. She was sitting in the hospital waiting room watching TV. The staff looked sceptical that she was actually injured at all until they X rayed the arm. I think if it had happened at nursery or school it could have easily been missed- she frequently hurt herself but didn't react.

@Lulualla I agree. The majority of these were denied medical attention because they didn’t make much of a fuss. I couldn’t imagine sending a child into school in so much agony they had to be dressed. Dumb decision there

pingponggo · 03/12/2019 17:37

If you were a bad mum you wouldn't be feeling guilty OP. All mums have done something like this, or will at some point!

wifeslife · 03/12/2019 17:39

My husband had a broken leg for over a week 😂😂😂

Kensie · 03/12/2019 17:39

My Nan was sent to school by her mother with a burst appendix. Her mother told her it was period pain and you have to suck it up and get on with it because this is just what women go through. She nearly dropped dead in assembly, and was in hospital for ages.

pingponggo · 03/12/2019 17:40

@raphael34 unnecessary comment but hope you feel better about yourself by putting the op down. Prat.

There are photographs of me sitting, smiling holding my newborn DS in my arms. I was the happiest I had ever been in my life. He was literally dying in front of me. His SATs were 60, and he would spend the next three months in ICU.

Bubblysqueak · 03/12/2019 17:40

My son walked around for 2 days including school with a broken bone in his foot.
The school were a bit shitty when I rang them and said I was taking him to minor injuries as his foot had started getting a bit of a bruise (in fairness it didn't swell or bruise before that and he only said it was sore once or twice).
The nurse also didn't think it was broken but thought she would x-ray just in case. She was very surprised when the x-ray came back and showed the break.

Sometimes it's really hard to tell especially if she was keen to.go to school.

whyamidoingthis · 03/12/2019 17:44

I think my ds' broken collarbone was the only break where we went into a&e pretty quickly (by that, I mean the same day). Only reason we went in then was it was friday and the minor injuries clinic isn't open at night or at the weekend.

All other breaks (at least 3) waited minimum of 1, maximum of 3, days. Better than my friend whose daughter had a broken leg for 10 days. In fairness, she was able to walk.

It was agony this morning and I had to help her dress.

Hmm, I'm sorry OP but I don't agree with all the posters above and their tales of missing injuries. It was blatantly obvious by the fact she was in agony and couldn't dress herself that she needed medical attention. That's not missing it because it was a subtle presentation, that's ignoring it completely.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 03/12/2019 17:47

This happened to me when I was very young and one of my parents is an orthopaedic surgeon!

MoreToEatMoreToDrink · 03/12/2019 17:49

This happened to my paternal grandmother when she was small. She would tell everyone the story, I heard it many many times. Her dad was swinging her arm to loosen it off and everything. These things happen 💐

Lulualla · 03/12/2019 17:51

There are two crucial details here. The first is that she was in so much pain she couldn’t dress herself, and the other is that she really wanted to go to school,

The OP’s reason for ignoring it is that she’s a drama queen, but if she really wanted to go to school then she wouldn’t fake an injury which would keep her off. So she wasn’t faking it. Sending her in, when she’s in so much obvious and real pain was a bad decision.

angelikacpickles · 03/12/2019 17:52

My mother sent me to school with appendicitis. Taken to hospital that night and surgery the next morning!

JeSuisPrest · 03/12/2019 17:53

To the posters picking up on the "she was in agony and needed help getting dressed", I agree but in my slight defence we've also had other similar "in agony" situations which have turned out to be nothing at all. I made a wrong call this time.

You’ll both laugh about it one day!

mencken · 03/12/2019 17:54

oh well, lesson learned about not being such a drama queen next time. Perhaps dig out your book of Aesops' fables? She's old enough..

FannyFifer · 03/12/2019 17:57

I sent my child age 10 to school with a broken ankle. He lasted the whole day, I went to collect him & he hobbled down the steps, I lifted his trouser leg & was like, oh fuck!
Straight to A&E, I am also a nurse. Blush

Notodontidae · 03/12/2019 18:00

Funny lot on here sometimes, the only mistake you made was not asking someone on here first, some of them have a sixth sense about things like this, and when a drama llama isn't joking. Some runners have carried on running, not knowing they've broken a bone. Parents make wrong call; all the time, yours was put right immediately, well done.

SocksRock · 03/12/2019 18:01

Sent my drama queen daughter to school with a broken wrist. Twice. The A&E nurse said she had done the exact same thing and I wasn't to worry.

JenniferM1989 · 03/12/2019 18:04

It's not that you didn't believe her, you did say you would take her to the walk in right away but she didn't want to miss something at school so went. You aren't a doctor so you weren't to know. She's being seen to now and that's the main thing. Wishing her a speedy recovery and don't beat yourself up ♥️

FrenchFancie · 03/12/2019 18:06

Happened to me with a broken wrist - my mother was a nurse in a&e at the time and told me off for being a drama llama “you should see some of our patients who are really hurt”.
Yeah thanks mum. 8 weeks in plaster.

KnitFastDieWarm · 03/12/2019 18:08

Oh bless you, these things happen!
I had meningitis a few years ago and will never, ever let my DH forget that he said your haven’t got meningitis, don’t be daft!’ about an hour before I had to be admitted to hospital Grin
My dad once broke his foot while running and carried on for another two miles before conceding that, actually, the ‘mild strain’ wasn’t going away on its own...
Don’t beat yourself up Flowers
