According to The Crown a woman in her late thirties is a bit past it

Just watched first episode of series three. Queenie is being considered as an older woman, aging etc.
I looked up her age in 64 when series starts. She's 38. Thirty bloody eight!
I know times were different then but I deeply resent the idea, that at 40, I'm in anyway past it. Intellectually, physically, emotionally or otherwise. In fact I'm just getting going and I now have wisdom and confidence to boot.
Why did they have to change the actress? The actress who played her in series one and two is 35 in real life. Only a few years younger than the age she needs to portray.
What the hell is wrong with people?

I'm invested in mysoginistic portrayal of women.
A man in his thirties would never be considered past it

Well by the end of series three the queen would be 51. And Olivia Colman is 45. So it seems perfectly reasonable casting.

I think you're projecting some of your own fears onto a casting decision. I really enjoy that we're seeing better roles for "middle aged" actresses these days.

But it was different then. Looking at photos of grandparents when they were in their late 30s, they could easily be 50+ - the hairstyles, clothing etc all made people look, to our eyes, old before their time.

Olivia Coleman is playing the Queen for two series spanning about 20 years! Of course they don't want a 35-year-old starting the series.

That’s what it was like in 1964. Why do you think the women’s rights movement hit its peak from then to the mid-70s? Things were much much worse for women then. To not show that would be offensive.

I agree with this. Especially the casting of Olivia Coleman was she can fit the age span the series covers well.

However I do think as a society we place far too much emphasis on looking younger than we are, like the worst thing a woman can do is look her actual age. I'm 34 and I think I look it, and that's fine.
