Christmas dinner solo - what would you have?

Pierrettelasanguinaire · 30/11/2019 20:56

If you had only yourself to please, and no witnesses, what would be your ideal Christmas dinner?
I rather used to admire a woman who worked on the principle of a couple of boiled eggs and a bottle of gin (she did have other options for the day: it was choice).

Hypothetical thread - I'm not asking for advice as will not be alone, although I would be happy to be so.

I'm v tempted by the melting M&S cheese now Grin
I might just go to the food hall and grab random things that look delicious. Basically my plan is me, the cat, food, Netflix and naps. He will think it's the best thing ever

ShippingNews · 01/12/2019 01:55

A friend does this every alternate year, because of her DD going to the inlaws on those years. She always makes herself a big lobster salad, and follows it with a bar of Belgian chocolate. I'd do the same !

kateandme · 01/12/2019 03:40

could i not just do everything as usual.if this is not actually going to happen anyway:
breakfast scrambled eggs.
full turkey.all the trimmings. no christmas pudding.a think id have a yule log instead.
snacking on my choc tiffin biscuit cake.
other christmasie nibbles.
then leftovers in sandwhiches. and bubble and squeak.
tin of heroes
tin of roses
tin of celebrations(come on they all have the ones we do and dont like in them)

Cheese fondue, a bottle of champagne, and a giant sticky toffee pudding.

SD1978 · 01/12/2019 04:12

Cheese, bread, cut meats. Crisps, maybe Coke Zero. Possibly some baked camemeber.

HeronLanyon · 01/12/2019 04:15

Crisps and dips.
Cheese/fruit board.
Pistachios.
Some kind of very garlicky rich pasta baked.
A long lie down. A hot bath. A clean bed. A good sleep.
Grin

A beautiful piece of steak with a slow-baked jacket potato anda nicely dressed salad. And lots of sweet pink wine. Followed by as much sherry trifle as I can eat.

Bloodybridget · 01/12/2019 05:52

I would love a really good steak, but I don't want to risk not cooking it perfectly, and I certainly don't want to have to wash the frying pan and clean the hob afterwards (or even the next day). So I'll go for something delicious from Cook/Waitrose/M&S that comes in a foil dish - maybe duck? - with dauphinoise potatoes, or McCain's best oven chips and fine green beans. A glass or two of red wine.
Mini blinis with smoked salmon and lumpfish roe to start, with a mini bottle of cava, perhaps creme brulee for pudding. A morsel of Roquefort, then strong black coffee and a couple of dark chocolate truffles.

JustaScratch · 01/12/2019 05:53

I think it's symptomatic of the year I've had that this sounds like absolute heaven!* Champagne cocktails, really decent cheese and bread, antipasti, and crisps, and lots of Christmas films.

*I don't mean it really, just slightly dreading another Christmas schlepping round other people's houses doing what everyone else wants!

'Vittles and grog' Grin

I'd go for cheeses, cooked meats, seafood and hot smoked salmon. Not sure i'll have the budget!

dudsville · 01/12/2019 06:45

I always remember my first solo Christmas after the end of a long disastrous relationship. I bought pigs in blankets, a Turkey crown and the sides, a bottle of nice red, can't remember the grape. I slept in, had a stine breakfast of baked salmon with perfectly cooked scrambled eggs. Then around lunch time I phoned family. Afterward, still early, I cooked the pigs, opened the bottle, felt very merry, sang and danced to music, fell asleep, woke and watched some Christmas specials. It was a fabulous free day!

Nowadays, I'd choose different food, bo longer eat lovely pigs, so I'd need to think that one through!

FabulouslyFab · 01/12/2019 06:47

Hot roast beef baguette with gravy for dipping and roast potatoes followed by that m&s pavlova. All calorie free of course!!

borntobequiet · 01/12/2019 06:50

I’ve done this. A nice little pheasant, roast baby potatoes and parsnips, sprouts, carrots. Stilton cheese. Red wine. A walk through the snowy woods during the day. One of my nicest Christmas days.

Pinkstars2501 · 01/12/2019 06:57

Ooo a nice baked Camembert, with various dipping things: pigs in blankets, garlic bread, cooked meat slices....anything really. Add in some crisps and cider and it's a beautiful day!

Or maybe a salmon fillet and some new potatoes in salted butter with green beans.

shiveringtimber · 01/12/2019 07:25

Mmm... yum. Totally hypothetical because I don't eat this anymore but foie gras with some lovely bits of toast, and a fresh salad of greens with beetroot. Followed by a filet mignon of beef and some gratin dauphinois. Some decent wine, Cabernet Sauvignon with the beef.

If I were keeping it cheap and cheerful, I'd have a jacket potato with half a tin of baked beans, grated cheddar, a dollop of crème fraîche and freshly ground pepper. With mince pies and (clotted) cream to follow. I'd make myself a couple of frozen lime margaritas, too.

CurlyMango · 01/12/2019 08:35

Poached salmon and asparagus. Chocolate ice cream. Yum. Yum.
