Christmas dinner solo - what would you have?

Pierrettelasanguinaire · 30/11/2019 20:56

If you had only yourself to please, and no witnesses, what would be your ideal Christmas dinner?
I rather used to admire a woman who worked on the principle of a couple of boiled eggs and a bottle of gin (she did have other options for the day: it was choice).

Hypothetical thread - I'm not asking for advice as will not be alone, although I would be happy to be so.

I would make my stuffing loaf and eat it with crackers and cheese, Branson pickle and home made honey and mustard ham.

I wouldn't be bothered making a big dinner but I'd eat the above followed by home made trifle and whipped cream.

All washe down with Rosé wine Wine

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/11/2019 21:32

I'm having cheese, many, many types, then some olives, anchovies, pate, breadsticks, cheese, cheese fondue and more cheese.
I'm on my own this year too.

Roast potatoes and gravy with sprouts cooked with pancetta and puréed carrots with butter and nutmeg. A bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape. Creme brûlée. Cointreau on ice. Call the Midwife on TV. A jigsaw puzzle on the go.

It sounds heavenly!

Cheese on toast.
A cream slice
Hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows.
Whisky.

Dollymixture22 · 30/11/2019 21:35

Lobster for starter
A big bbq burger and chips for main - restaurant quality
New York cheese cake (real - not the crap you get here)

Lots of red wine😊

TwinkleRedMoon · 30/11/2019 21:35

Chips, cheese and gravy.

Comradesally · 30/11/2019 21:36

My favourites if I was flush... Plus crisps, crackers, Yy to cheese maybe baked cambert, good bread... Chockates...

Treq · 30/11/2019 21:37

I did Christmas alone from 18 to I think 28 possibly 29. I loved it actually! I used to do nearly the full works but mostly freezer stuff so minimal effort so aunt betties roasties, stuffing, parsnips, then some peas, frozen sprouts boiled up bisto gravy and used to do some kind of freezer nutroast, enough for plenty of leftovers on boxing day and a pot of sorbet for dessert! So I felt like I was getting the full Christmas dinner experience without too much effort.
I think one year I shoved in a pizza but it didn't feel right!

Snufflesdog · 30/11/2019 21:38

Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings
Loads of chocolate and crisps and a few cocktails
That would be the dream

Outsomnia · 30/11/2019 21:39

I firmly think that those who host for the mad in laws and so forth would absolutely LOVE a day in the pjs and no hassle.

Christmas can be a total pain for many.

We do our gathering in the morning, rotate it amongst us, and then we go our separate ways. Works for us anyway.

drspouse · 30/11/2019 21:39

I'd have duck or goose but otherwise the rest of a typical Christmas dinner. I love it Glitterball

wibdib · 30/11/2019 21:39

Steak cooked in butter with lots of garlic, big tossed salad, maybe a few oven chips...

Cookie dough ice cream

Cherry liqueur chocolates to enjoy later on...

Comradesally · 30/11/2019 21:40

A whole duck to yourself?. We always have duck or goose as family but not sure I'd do one for me...

gothefcktosleep · 30/11/2019 21:40

This is my jam.

Starter: either smoked salmon and rye bread with salted butter OR pate and toast with chutney (and butter) accompanied by a glass of champs

Main: Turkey, all the trimmings, except I wouldn’t do big rosaries, I’d do roast new potatoes because I like them more. And I’d have cranberry sauce and bread sauce. My mum never gets that stuff in and I love it. I’d probably have some more champagne

Dessert: treacle tart and clotted cream icecream with whipped cream from a can, also I’d spray it straight in my mouth as well. I’d have some sweet wine now, thank you.

Cheese course: Brie, goats cheese, ossau iraty and some manchego. With honey. And grapes. And port.

Then later: chocolates, Quality Street. Glass of baileys OR amaretto.

Maybe some cookies as well.

Comradesally · 30/11/2019 21:41

Oh yes, cherry liqueur chocolate... Maybe cherry brandy??

GinUnicorn · 30/11/2019 21:41

Oh lots of champagne for one.

Fancy cheeses and biscuits and some of the parry food stuff you get like Brie and cranberry with roast potatoes and veg. I’d be really lazy and slob out all day

morriseysquif · 30/11/2019 21:42

Crusty bread and cheese, macaroni cheese, steamed sponge and custard, basically just yellow food.

So hungry right now.

PoohBearsHole · 30/11/2019 21:43

A whole box of mini stollen from waitrose
Pol roger champagne
Smoked salmon - really good quality not the stuff I usually buy if I ever do
Cheese - squishy runny cheese
Dried meats

The I would probably be sick!

itsgettingweird · 30/11/2019 21:43

Cheese, cold meats, crusty bread, grapes.

Various puddings!

I'd also have the Christmas tree crumpets and too much butter at some point!

Comradesally · 30/11/2019 21:43

Go loving the idea of bread source, port, pudding wine... Yes!

But not quality street... Maybe some really top quality chocks?

PoohBearsHole · 30/11/2019 21:43

Because I’d eaten so much not for any other reason!

Spied · 30/11/2019 21:44

Mini buffet
Vol-au-vents, mini pizza, wedges and dips etc.
Chocolate cake & mint ice-cream.

Smallnmighty · 30/11/2019 21:45

Oh I'd LOVE this so much, haha!! After years of hosting big family Christmases, pleasing everyone else (not being a martyr, it's only hindsight has made me realise) I'd love to have the day alone and please just myself.

I'd eat salty roast potatoes and pigs in blankets in front of the TV, Wensleydale with cranberries, custard with cream, maybe a meringue, baked Brie, chocolates.

Heavenly! Was due to do this last year and caved to pressure to go to friends, other people feel uneasy if we're alone at Christmas. And I guess there's a MASSIVE difference between wanting to be, and having to be. A whole day to do exactly what I want...yes please Grin

gothefcktosleep · 30/11/2019 21:46

Oh @Comradesally good Point, let’s have some Charbonnel et Walker pink champagne truffles then!

Blingismything · 30/11/2019 21:48

I'd graze all day, things like tempura prawns, white toblerone, squirty cream straight into mouth as above. Rombouts coffee, after eights, cheese and biscuits, picalilli and ham sandwiches, vol au vents, tunis cake.
