Christmas dinner solo - what would you have?

If you had only yourself to please, and no witnesses, what would be your ideal Christmas dinner?
I rather used to admire a woman who worked on the principle of a couple of boiled eggs and a bottle of gin (she did have other options for the day: it was choice).

Hypothetical thread - I'm not asking for advice as will not be alone, although I would be happy to be so.

I do solo, last year had brunch of blinis with gravlax and sauce along with half a bottle of raspberry gin, which I didn’t realise was so potent, so I was zonked by dinner time and had my nice butcher steak with mushrooms and cheesy mash for boxing day instead! Hagen Dazs salted caramel for pud.

Pierrettelasanguinaire · 30/11/2019 21:49

So many posters of taste and discernment and a mania for cheese, which I share. The mania, not my cheese!

Last year I intended to have sirloin steak, chips, grilled tomato and sauce Béarnaise and some Barolo. What I actually had was too many me-made sausage rolls, rather a lot of cheese, all the Barolo and a fucktonne of pistachio Turkish Delight. Indigestible but liberating.

Will be rather more conventional this year as there is another person to consider.
If he doesn't stop bugging me, probably fricassée de chat aux champignons (do you think that would freeze ok?)

Sandwiches: turkey, Cranberry sauce, stuffing and mayo. Beef, tomato and onion sauce (plus stuffing because its lush) and ham, tomato and mayo. All in little petit pain rolls, onion ring crisps on the side and trifle to follow. Probably more sandwiches later on with cheese and crackers and lots of chocolate. Probably lots and lots of cups of tea

Love a traditional Christmas dinner, I have several in the run up. But the idea of nice bread with cheese and pickles/chutney, cold meat, chocolate and general rubbish sounds like a good idea.

GBroGal · 30/11/2019 21:57

For my first solo Christmas, I opened a nice bottle of wine. I had a smoked salmon starter, then duck breast with orange sauce and a mini Christmas pud to finish. My colleagues were horrified at the thought that I would be all alone - I loved having everything just as I liked it.

Soontobe60 · 30/11/2019 21:57

Ooh! Garlic prawns, a really good thick rib eye steak, buttery mash, glazed carrots and petit pois, Diane sauce. Followed by proper Christmas cake with thick marzipan and royal icing!

Tartyflette · 30/11/2019 21:58

A rich, gooey dribbly real Italian lasagne. Good bread. Green salad.
Melty cheeses.
A really dense, moist, extra chocolate-y chocolate cake. Served with several different tubs of excellent ice cream. (Because it's too hard to choose just one flavour,)

Stripyhoglets1 · 30/11/2019 22:00

Dauphinouse potatos. Nice beef stew from m and s. Ready prepped pot of veg. Nice creamy pudding like cheesecake, or creme caramel from Bonne Maman.
Couple of immodium to counter the effect on my digestive system of all that cream!

Smoked salmon and prawns for tea.

Dollymixture22 · 30/11/2019 22:03

If I was on my own on Christmas Day I would research the best restaurant or caterer that would deliver a meal. I have thought about spending Christmas Day alone a few times and have always decided money would be no object - I would, just totally spoil myself😊😊

BreconBeBuggered · 30/11/2019 22:13

My own mushroom and Brazil nut roast. Roast potatoes, sprouts and some M&S carrot and swede mash. Key lime pie for pudding. Won't bother with a starter as it might take up space I need for butter AND gravy. Walk the dog in the morning, then plant my fat arse on the sofa and watch whatever the fuck I like on telly. A few dainty party snacks later if I can squeeze them in. Not hugely bothered about alcohol at Christmas.

dontgobaconmyheart · 30/11/2019 22:13

I'm often alone on christmas as DP works - I just use it as an excuse to go to waitrose (normally don't shop there) and buy whatever I normally want but cant justify. Last year I had salmon terrine/blinis, prosecco and elderflower cordial all day, expensive cut of lamb for dinner, shed loads of nibbly bits and some posh xmas pud and sauce, did myself a full on cheese board with pickles etc, baked camembert. Then had the leftovers on boxing day.

Honestly its revolutionised xmas for me, can't wait, and won't be spending the day upset I'm not having a roast!

exLtEveDallas · 30/11/2019 22:24

Years back when DD was small, DH would take her to MILs for a few days in the summer hols. I bloody loved it. PJs straight after work, on the sofa with a book and coco pops for dinner!

So if I was on my own for Xmas day it would be similar. I might splash out on some posh crisps to dunk in dips, and a baked Camembert if I could be bothered. But probably not. CocoPops FTW Grin

GrumpyHoonMain · 30/11/2019 22:29

I would have a huge platter of sushi to myself. gin and tonic to wash it down with. Then followed by a cheeseboard and possibly a slice cheesecake too.

Livingthedream12345 · 30/11/2019 22:54

Last year DD was with her dad. I had a marvellous day, I only had myself to please!
Cava and pigs in blankets while my turkey and all the trimmings cooked. Big dog walk on the beach first. Loved it!

moltonbrownsoap · 30/11/2019 23:18

Shit ton of cheese and some decent wine.

EgremontRusset · 30/11/2019 23:19

Duck confit! With lots of veggies, but probably pre-prepared ones. Bliss.

ineedto · 30/11/2019 23:28

Buttery steak, prawns and bread to mop up the juices with a large Malbec.

A small box of pick your own luxury chocolates from the deli in town... must include their irresistible cognac truffle!

PrimalLass · 30/11/2019 23:32

Pork stuffing, gravy, sprouts and aunt Bessie's. And a lovely bottle of red.

PickAChew · 30/11/2019 23:34

It would have to be a curry.

BingoLittlesUncle · 01/12/2019 00:44

Smoked salmon, cream cheese, champagne, Stilton, port and maybe a Guinness or two as it's the festive season.

ClientListQueen · 01/12/2019 00:46

I've been alone most years
Ones I can remember are pizza, McDonald's, sausage and mash...
I think this years plan is nachos and then some sort of pudding with custard

iklboo · 01/12/2019 00:50

There's something on my FB with dippy free range boiled eggs with giant pigs in blankets as soldiers.

Doilooklikeatourist · 01/12/2019 01:05

Cheese on toast and a bottle of Sauvi B
But now I really want pigs in blankets too

chatwoo · 01/12/2019 01:29

Oh this thread is great! Grin

I'm not alone at Xmas but would love to have ALL the trimmings (can do without the meat), extra carrots, potatoes, a big slice of that Paxo stuffing with cranberries, sauce, gravy etc etc etc, maybe some Yorkshire puds. A selection of desserts (Yule log, ice cream, some German biscuits etc from Aldi) and for later on (if I haven't fallen in a sugar sleep), some cold meats, cheese, grapes etc. And maybe some of the leftover desserts... A couple of strong, well iced G&Ts would also feature somewhere.

Montyman · 01/12/2019 01:35

Oh wow. Am, eggs florentine for brekkie. With a mimosa. And the rest of the day snacking on cheese, antipasti, nice bread...and wine. And if somebody would lend me the turkey and stuffing and roasties; turkey, stuffing & mayo sandwich with roasties chopped thin and fried on the side.
