Was any child naughty enough to actually get a lump of coal/no presents from Father Christmas?

I've not heard of this happening in real life (due to bad behaviour by child rather than money or other issues of the parents). Has anyone else?

It happened to my grandmother and all her siblings! She never admitted what they did and sadly it's too late to ask now Sad I'd love to know what they had done, I'm sure they used to get into all kinds of trouble!

My nephew got a potato one year. He was told that whenever he was naughty Santa would swap one present for a potato. He never found out what present he missed out on! (None in reality Wink) But it had the desired effect.

Althought it happened in the past, surely no parent today is as mean as that!

We do the potato trick! Every year, my DS both get a potato in their stocking.

I tell them it's that Santa saw them do something naughty so he replaced one small pressie with a potato. It's a great threat to them throughout the year, too!

Although

We always used to get a bit of coal (wrapped up!) in with our other presents because 'nobody's perfect' and we burned it there and then on the fire. It's quite a special memory, actually, and never took away from Christmas happiness.

blibblibs · 30/11/2019 20:14

We do the potato thing too, even now that they don't believe in santa.

HerRoyalNotness · 30/11/2019 20:15

I think maybe parents need to be a bit meaner actually. Considering what I can replace with a potato, maybe their chocolate or candy canes.... or the bath bombs. I’d like all of those

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 30/11/2019 20:24

I can’t imagine doing it but it wouldn’t have fit anyway. Santa was just the delivery guy here when they were smaller and we never used him as a discipline technique.

ParkheadParadise · 30/11/2019 20:29

I remember my mum telling me that she thought Santa didn't like her because she would never get anything for Christmas.
She had 9 siblings. My sister recently found a old school photo of my uncle and some of the children had no shoes on.

HoneyandSpice · 30/11/2019 20:34

If you're old enough, yes you will remember that sort of thing. Same as 10 year olds getting sent up chimneys. Obviously doesn't happen now. Thankfully we live in pretty decent times. Except for food banks and destroying our planet etc (not being an arse, just genuinely concerned that people have forgotten past, current and future bleakness)
