How far is too far?

I have a full time job, I often work 50+ hours a week. I currently travel less than 5 mins to my place of work. However, there is a fantastic opportunity for me to take up another post. It's really ideal. The only catch is that it's a 40 drive each way.
I have 3 kids. I'll be out of the house from 7am - 6pm atleast. The job is temporary for about 3 months, starting Jan 2020. Tell me your thoughts- am I being selfish for wanting to do it? My husband and kids say go for it, but I'm not sure they realise what the reality will be.

If it's only temporary and you think you would enjoy it, then go for it. Its 3 months of your life and has potential to open other doors for you, as with anything.

You sound like you have your family's backing. Go for it!

Is the job you have now permanent? And what would you do after the 3 months?

ThatLibraryMiss · 27/11/2019 20:49

It's a horrible time of year to do it, dark and miserable. You won't see your home in daylight from one weekend to the next. Your husband will have to take on more of the house jobs that have previously been shared, including supervising homework and meals. You'll miss time with your kids. You (plural) will have to be organised when it comes to meal planning and shopping, maybe meal prep at weekends and remembering to put the slowcooker on in the mornings.

On the other hand, it's temporary. You'll really see the change of seasons as the dawn creeps earlier. 40 minutes isn't great but you can listen to audiobooks and podcasts and use the journey home to decompress. And it's a fantastic opportunity.

Does it come with more money? Enough to pay for a cleaner so you and your husband can relax when you get home instead of doing housework?

Try it. If it doesn't work you (plural again) only have to stick it out for three months.

AlwaysCheddar · 14/12/2019 08:06

It's a secondment, so I CNN either apply for it permanently or return to my substantive post 😊
