Argh - my boss rejected my FB friend request

I work in a friendly office and have a good relationship with my line managers. My boss's boss is a pleasant person who has other colleagues as FB friends so I thought I would send her a friend request. It was almost immediately rejected and now I feel mortified, especially as she's someone whom I wish to impress. I obviously misread the signals in thinking she wanted an informal friendship (she greets with a hug, is complimentary about my work etc etc). I basically feel as if I've been rejected by the cool kids. Should I apologise, ignore, what? I'm massively overthinking this but I feel I've made a massive tit of myself and don't know what to do next time I see her.

Just leave it. But I would never friend request my boss

GreenBasket · 27/11/2019 18:27

Do not mention it. Ever.

forkfun · 27/11/2019 18:28

Never speak of it again. It's the only way.

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 27/11/2019 18:28

Ignore. She probably just doesn't add work colleagues on Facebook as a blanket policy -- it doesn't mean she doesn't like you.

Finfintytint · 27/11/2019 18:28

Forget it. I would not want a Facebook relationship with anyone who was my supervisor.

happytoday73 · 27/11/2019 18:28

Don't worry about it. Her choice, her actions... You did nothing wrong. Youj haven't made a tit of yourself, dont mention it.

She may have known colleagues she is friends with on Facebook for years from before promoted and now doesn't want her team on Facebook but feels awkward with rejecting those already on

ScreamingValenta · 27/11/2019 18:29

I wouldn't do anything, just try to carry on as normal. If she has other colleagues as FB friends, it doesn't seem an unreasonable thing for you to have done, but if she does see it as a gaffe, apologising or querying it will only draw more attention to it. It might even have been a mistake on her part.

thatwasMauijustmessingaround · 27/11/2019 18:29

How do you know you've been rejected? (Genuine question, I've rejected people and didn't know it sent notifications)

AdriannaP · 27/11/2019 18:29

Omg why did you do that? I would never add a work colleague on fb. (And I am very friendly with most of them)

Don’t mention it.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 18:30

Don’t cross over work stuff and personal social media.

Burlea · 27/11/2019 18:30

Always remember people you work with are colleagues first and friends second.

orangeteal · 27/11/2019 18:31

I've only befriended managers/direct reports after leaving a job, don't panic you don't look silly, people just have different ways of handling it. Just leave it.

nikkylou · 27/11/2019 18:32

When you say they have other colleagues as fb friends, are they at the same level as her, or you?Are they people she manages or just people in the same organisation?

Depending on that would really determine if its against you personally or just a standard she applies to the people she shares personal information to.

In any case I wouldn't even mention it at work. She may come and explain herself, if it's the above.

Bookridden · 27/11/2019 18:35

I know now it was a stupid thing to do! It's probably wiser not to be FB friends (not that I share anything inappropriate) as I don't have to censor myself. You can tell your request has been rejected as their profile gives you the option to add them as a friend, which it wouldn't do if they were still considering.

I just feel hurt and embarrassed. Which I know is stupid. It's just awkward as she'll know I've FB stalked her. At least she's out of the office for a few weeks, giving time for my mortification to fade a bit.

WHY???? It's a huge no no.
Anyone at work who sends me facebook requests from work gets rejected immediately, I don't want anyone at work knowing my business. Urghhhh.

Bookridden · 27/11/2019 18:37

She is 2 grades higher than me. She is FB friends with other people of my grade, but admittedly she has known them longer from what I can see.

Bluntness100 · 27/11/2019 18:38

Yeah, I'm sorry op but why would you wish to be having access like that to your bosses private life? Why were you face book stalking her? She did the right thing rejecting it. You're not mates, you've no need to have access to her Facebook

Just try to forget this. Don't apologise, just don't do anything now.

Bookridden · 27/11/2019 19:00

Ah, sod it, I'm going to stop fretting. It was a friendly gesture on my part, and there's no obligation on her part to return it. I do my job well and I'm not looking for advancement, so no damage done after all. She can hardly be offended anyway at a friendly overture; I'm always quite pleased to get friends requests. And at least I won't have to censor my posts or think about how anything I write may compromise my professional life. I'm very active and political on social media so I may even have dodged a bullet there whilst paying her a compliment.

The power of positive thinking hey! I may yet manage to convince myself of all this, lol.

I rejected a friend request from my FIL! I love him and all but no I don't want him on my fb. I wouldn't want to be friends with my boss either. Fb is not for impressing people. Just let it lie…

ScreamingValenta · 27/11/2019 19:05

If she's off for a few weeks it will be, if not forgotten, relegated to the back of her mind by the time you meet again.

Bluetrews25 · 27/11/2019 19:23

If I don't want to accept the request and don't wish to cause offence, I just ignore the request. Seems a bit kinder - you could always just have missed it, or something.

Looobyloo · 28/11/2019 06:38

How do you know she rejected you? I didn't know facebook sent notifications.

Fairylea · 28/11/2019 06:42

“Active and political” on social media is the kind of person that makes me wish I hadn’t added someone as a friend... sorry but it’s just so annoying, I wouldn’t have people on my social media that I felt I needed to convert politically or morally! I think all things considered it’s a good thing you haven’t ended up friends with your boss on Facebook, it can make things so messy.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 28/11/2019 06:45

I just ignore requests I’m not interested in, no need to reject them!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 28/11/2019 06:46

“Active and political” ... ok I’ve recently hidden a few of those
