HELP: money paid into a closed bank account

a friend paid me a small amount into an account that is now closed, as he had the old details on his bank account.

he's telling me that I need to check with my old bank (closed one) rather than him checking at his end.

does anyone know what will happen? it's been a few weeks and no sign yet of it bouncing back into his account, and I want to avoid a call to my old bank if I can (dreaded call centre process of being on hold and the like wasting my time!). I want him to call his bank but he's too lazy!

It will probably be in a holding account at your bank. Are you sure it hasnt been redirected into your account? If not, he needs to ask his bank to put a trace on the payment to see where it has gone (if it hasn't been returned to him)

Ah right, do you not have an account at that bank any more? It wont have been redirected then unless you closed it as part of a current account switch

How long ago was the account closed?

I work for a bank and he'll need to call his bank to ask for a faster payment query, there's nothing your old bank can do for you

thank you everyone!!! I will check my new account in case it has been redirected there, and if not ask him to ask his bank for a faster payment query. :)

Yeah if you switched bank within last three years it should find its way to you, if not it will go back into his account. Either way you should be able to trace it 😁
