Set up of Nintendo Switch

DS has a Switch for Christmas. Before I wrap it is there anything I need to do to set up. He’s impatient and I’ve also heard about other consoles needing downloads etc. This is our first foray into gaming and am utterly clueless. We have the box with the console in and 2 games

Got ds one for his birthday, they’re fab! When you first put in a game it’ll say it needs a software update. My ds is also lacking in patience, so I set it up first then put it back in the box and wrapped it.

Shit I've just wrapped DS's. How long does the software update take?
