How about buying one with roots and in a pot, then it could be put in your garden for the rest of the year?

If you're buying a cut one I think it would start shedding its leaves well before Christmas.

Yes you can, I buy one from Ikea every year at this time leave it outside for a week and put it up 1st December, take it down the day after New Year's Day and it always still looks great.
